How long have you worked for Schooner Surprise ? About 4 months

What do you like about your job on the dock? Interacting with people and hearing all kinds of different stories, also the staff has been great to be around and talk to.

Best places to eat in Camden? My favorite place to eat is either Long Grain or Camden Deli.

What can you recommend for people to do when visiting Camden? I always like to recommend the Mt Battie hike and any live music or social events going on in Camden/Rockport.

Meet Audrey! How long have you worked for Surprise and Anjacaa? I started out selling tickets for Surprise in 2019, but have been sailing as crew since 2021!

What do you love about your job? I love this job because it puts everything else in perspective. Whatever stress or frustrations or negativity you may be feeling, it all melts away when you’re on the water. I also appreciate how every day is unique; no sail is exactly the same as the last.

Where have you sailed to? I have sailed all over the East Coast, as crew and also living aboard a 33 foot sailboat with my boyfriend and our cat. Definitely looking to expand my sailing grounds in the near future!

What are your favorite places in Maine? Speaking in general, Monhegan Island and Morse Mountain Preserve near Phippsburg. But my favorite places in Maine will always be tiny coves and hideaways in the many small, uninhabited islands off the Maine coast. Having sailed the entirety of the eastern coastline, I can honestly say there is no better place to be on a boat than here!

Meet Delfina our daughter! How long have you worked for surprise?
On the booth and the boat this is my 5th year. Delfina has been around since we bought the boat 11 years ago sailing with us and hanging out at the ticket booth.
What do you most enjoy about work?
Definitely meeting new people and talking to people from different places. Every day I have someone tell me how lucky I am to have this job and live in Maine and they’re so right!
Which boat do you like to sail on best? Why?
I like to work on surprise more because there are more people to talk to and I feel that I know the boat better. But I prefer to sail on Anjacaa.

How long have you worked for Surprise: Since the summer of 2021

What do you enjoy more about the job: Working with amazing people every day and constantly learning new things that make me a better sailor and person.

What things can you recommend for people coming to the area: Get outside and stay outside! There’s so much amazing hiking, biking, camping, swimming and other things to do you will never run out of fun stuff. (That is of course after coming out on our boats!)
What is a memorable day or time you had on the water: It’s a bit boring but me and Laird had three sails in the afternoon on the 23rd of July that were just perfection. Great wind, great people, smooth sailing, and then a beautiful sunset. Everything was just sublime I had to keep pinching myself.

Meet Captain Laird!
How long have you been working for Surprise?

For nine years, and I’m hoping to do so for at least another nine.

What do you like most about your job?

I love sharing with new and returning passengers that special moment when, with engine off, we start sailing on wind power alone. Sailing the soulful Surprise and spirited Anjacaa on beautiful Penobscot Bay is a pleasure you never forget. I also love working with our dedicated, joyful crew and staff.

What are a few memorable places you have sailed?

I’ve been fortunate to captain sailing charters in Tahiti, Thailand, the Grenadines, and the British Virgin Islands, and to be a crew member on two Transatlantic sails, one from Antigua to Spain and the other from the Bahamas to England. Sailing Surprise and Anjacaa on Pen Bay still takes the cake.

What other things can you recommend for visitors to do in the area?

In addition to sampling Maine seafood at our terrific restaurants, you could grab a takeaway lobster roll or fish taco and drive up Mt Battie to enjoy your meal and the stunning panoramic view. Go for a hike, and then swim in nearby Megunticook Lake at Barrett’s Cove or Fernald’s Neck Preserve. Catch a performance in the Camden Library Amphitheatre or a concert at the Opera House. If you get a rainy day, check out Owls Head Transportation Museum or duck into one of Camden’s nifty bookstores. And before you go home, start planning a return trip to come sailing with us again!
