America 250: Enoch Poor
A shipbuilder and merchant from Exeter, Enoch Poor rose to become a brigadier general in the Continental Army and one of George Washington’s trusted commanders. He served through five years of the Revolutionary War, including at Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and later with Lafayette’s light infantry. His service remains an important part of New Hampshire’s Revolutionary history.

Join us this Fourth of July for a special open house to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Enjoy guided tours of the exhibitions and see rare objects from New Hampshire’s Revolutionary past, including two flags from the Second N.H. Continental Regiment. Learn 10 things you probably didn’t know about New Hampshire and the American Revolution. Participate in family friendly games and activities while enjoying the festive atmosphere of downtown Concord, with a parade at 9 a.m. and the State House ceremony at 10 a.m. ***The New Hampshire Historical Society is only open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on this holiday. Admission is free.***

America 250: Matthew Thornton
Irish-born physician and patriot Matthew Thornton represented New Hampshire and signed the Declaration of Independence. He served in New Hampshire’s revolutionary government, helped draft the state’s first constitution, and later served as a judge and state representative and senator.

America 250: Colonel Alexander Scammell
Colonel Alexander Scammell served as George Washington’s aide-de-camp and later commanded troops during the fight for independence. Remembered for his bravery and leadership, he gave his life during the Yorktown campaign.

Happy Ratification Day! On this day, New Hampshire became the ninth and deciding state to ratify the constitution, making it the law of the land.

On this day, more than 1,200 New Hampshire men (nearly two-thirds of all American soldiers) participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Led by Colonel John Stark of Derryfield and Major Andrew McClary of Epsom, they manned a fence along the base of the hill. They stopped two assaults and inflicted heavy casualties on the British before being forced to withdraw with their powder almost spent. Ninety-three New Hampshire men were reported killed, missing or wounded, yet General Burgoyne declared their retreat "covered with bravery and military skill".
