City of Duluth Parks & Recreation, has one of the most extensive park systems in the nation! A four-season city with 11,000 acres of green space alongside the great Lake Superior and St. Louis River Estuary, has miles of trails and over 100 parks, providing a suitable back drop for a multitude of recreation activities.

On Saturday, over 200 people came out to Everyone Can Bird! It was a beautiful day to be outside and learn about the birds migrating to their winter homes.

Everyone Can Bird is a special birding event focused on accessibility for all. We love getting the track chair on the trail for folks to use! ASL interpretation was provided, binoculars were available to use, and free shuttle bus transportation from multiple locations was offered.

Each day will consist of a structured activity led by staff for first half of the session; the second half will allow for continued practice of the day’s focus or for other games and activities using a variety of sports and play equipment.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Join us at the October Women Hike Duluth + Social to enjoy the Lakewalk from the Lighthouse to the Fitger's stairs and back! This is an easy, paved trail. All ages are welcome to join for free. Afterwards, stay for a social at Canal Park Brewing Company on the patio. Wednesday, Oct. 21: Toddler Playtime is a program where kids ages 0 – 5 (with a caregiver) can enjoy safe, active play while meeting new friends. Adults choose from toys and equipment for their child’s age and interests. This is an open-play style program and no activity instruction will be provided. This free program meets from 10-11:30 a.m. at Washington Center Gym, 310 N 1st Ave W. Learn more: bit.ly/3TzaOtH

The friendly Evergreen Senior Center is open for visitors from 1-3 p.m. There are books, board games, and cards for anyone to use. Come with a group of friends or just stop in to find out more about senior programs.

Another great season of NFL Flag Football League wrapped up this week. Congratulations to all the youth players on an awesome season of fun and hard work!

A special highlight: the 6th-8th grade division had two teams that consisted of all-girls, a first for this program. We hope to see the number of girls participating grow next year!

This is a big program; 28 teams were supported by 50+ volunteer coaches and nine referees this year. We're grateful to have a community so dedicated.

Finally, huge thanks to Parks & Rec staff for their efforts making this program happen! Organizing that many teams, jerseys, and divisions is no small feat. Their hard work makes this a special program for everyone involved.

As temperatures drop, consider renting a local Community Center for your next event! Portman, Harrison, Evergreen, and Lafayette Community Centers can all host up to 50 people and rental rates start as low as $35/hour for youth birthday parties and community programming. Howl-o-ween at Keene is this Thursday, October 15 from 4-6 p.m.! Bring your pup to play, take a photo with our Howl-o-ween photo booth, and grab a pup cup for your pal! This event is free and for all ages.
