Generations on the Wing
Monarch butterflies start to return to our region in late February and March. Unlike the fall migration, spring Monarchs travel in small groups, laying eggs and dying as they travel north. Each new generation lasts about two to six weeks, which means by the time some butterflies reach New England, there could have been 4 to 5 generations conceived along the way. And because the larvae of Monarch butterflies only feed on milkweed, it’s important to encourage these plants to grow in gardens and open spaces. Native species of milkweed such as Florida Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), Butterfly W**d (A. tuberosa), Aquatic milkweed (A.perennis), or Pinewoods milkweed (A. humistrata) will provide a feast for the black and striped caterpillars. Oriental milkweed (A. curassavica), frequently sold at garden centers, should be avoided because it grows year-round in Florida and can play host to Monarch parasites. To learn more about our local flora and fauna, check out the displays at the Apalachicola Estuarine Research Reserve, 108 Island Drive, Eastpoint. Elmer Fudd is a 5 month old Border Collie mix who was caught being vewy, vewy, quite while sneaking into the neighbors wabbit house.
