Most people don’t know the history behind the waterfall scars👇

In the 19th century, mountain streams were diverted through hand-dug ditches, rock walls, and tunnels to irrigate sugarcane plantations. The waterfalls on this side of the coast dried up and never came back.

🪸 But a reef grew in their place.

Today it’s home to turtles, fish, octopus, and eels. The reef couldn’t have thrived any other way.

From the dry side with waterfall scars, to the wet side full of active falls, Nā Pali Coast is best experienced on the water.

It’s one of those Kauai activities that turns into more than just another boat tour. It doubles as a history lesson and a beautiful adventure.

The cause of the waterfall scar👇

In the 19th century, water was sourced from mountain streams through hand dug ditches, rock walls, and tunnels to irrigate large sugarcane plantations.

The dry side of Nā Pali Coast now shows where waterfalls once were.

But surprisingly, something positive came from years without freshwater flowing here!

There are now reefs that would not have been able to thrive if the waterfalls were still flowing. This reef has become home to sea life like fish, turtles, octopus, eels, and more.
