It’s my last day in Bucharest and my last day of this trip. Today’s tour was called “The Secret Bucharest.” It was with the same fantastic guide I had yesterday, Razvan. Today he took me through the quiet streets on the eastern side of the city. He told fabulous stories along the way, and pointed out all the different architectural styles of the last few centuries. Unfortunately a lot is in disrepair, but it is still quite beautiful. It was a great way to see a different side of the city!

Lower Danube (Budapest to Bucharest) - day 11, part 2.

My afternoon tour today was fantastic. I booked a private tour with Tours By Locals called “Communist Scars of Bucharest.” My guide, Razvan, took me to several places in the city and told me about the history of communism here in Bucharest.

It’s a fascinating story, culminating in the December 1989 Romanian Revolution that overthrew the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. There are strong echoes of Bucharest’s history that we are currently living through in the US. I encourage you to read about Ceaușescu and the revolution to better understand the story.

I got soaked in Brazil for free. In Argentina, I paid extra to go under one of the falls. The poncho did not help in either country.

Lower Danube (Budapest to Bucharest) - day 11. Today is my first of two days on my own in Bucharest, after the cruise and extension wrapped up. I have a tour scheduled this afternoon, so I spent the rainy morning wandering through the city. After exploring, I headed back to my hotel to dry off and warm up with some lunch.

Lower Danube (Budapest to Bucharest) - day 10.

Today is the last day of the cruise and extension portion of my trip. We are on the move again today, driving back to Bucharest from Braşov. Along the way, we stopped in Sinaia to visit Peles Castle. This stunning Neo-Renaissance masterpiece, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, served as the summer residence of King Carol I.

From there we continued on to Bucharest, stopping just outside the city center for a late lunch. Then it was a short drive back to the Intercontinental Athenee Hotel. I will actually spend 3 nights here, as I have 2 more days on my own here in Bucharest.

A delightfully spooky evening visit to Bran Castle tonight, with a wonderful dinner there. Two days before Halloween is the perfect time to visit Dracula’s castle!

On a cruise port day, do you need to book a tour, or can you just get off the ship and wander?

Short answer: it depends on the port. Longer answer: I have done all three. Ship excursions, one third-party kayak tour in Haines, and a fair amount of wandering on my own, usually paired with a tour. So far, no trouble. That is a record, not a guarantee.

Lower Danube (Budapest to Bucharest) - day 9.

Today is a chilly and dreary day…a perfect day to be in Transylvania. Our excursion today was “Mighty Prejmer Fort & Medieval Brasov.” We started at Prejmer Fort, a fortified church. Then we visited Old Town Braşov, first with a walking tour then some free time to wander.

Lower Danube (Budapest to Bucharest) - day 8.

Today started with a city tour in Bucharest…a panoramic bus ride first, then walking through the Old Town area. We had some free time for lunch, then it was off to Braşov.

The bus ride to Braşov was beautiful. The second half of the trip is in the Carpathian Mountains, first working our way up to the top then back down the other side. The fall colors are stunning. It started getting dark and the fog rolled in as we got to Transylvania, which definitely set the perfect mood.

Once in Braşov we settled into our hotel here for a two night stay. There was another nice buffet dinner for us this evening.
