A gathering of some of the Tetons’ most impressive residents.
Bighorn sheep are built for life in rugged mountain terrain, with incredible balance and curved horns that make them unmistakable. As the seasons change, spotting a group like this is a reminder of just how much wildlife calls the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem home.

The moose are on the move in Grand Teton National Park. 🫎
This big bull was caught running through the valley as the fall rut gets underway.
Fall is one of the best times of year to see wildlife in the Tetons. Bulls are searching for cows, covering ground, and becoming much more active as the rut peaks.
You never know what you’re going to find around the next bend.

Cool to watch, but give moose plenty of space. They’re wild animals and can be extremely unpredictable, especially during the rut. Don’t approach or crowd them.

A mule deer buck, still carrying his velvet.
By this time of year, most bucks have already shed their velvet, making a buck like this one a pretty special sight.
Found down in the valley, this guy is still putting the finishing touches on a new set of antlers before the rut begins.
One of the best parts of exploring the Greater Yellowstone is that wildlife encounters aren’t staged, timed, or guaranteed. Sometimes you simply find yourself in the right place at the right time.
And sometimes, there’s a velvet-covered mule deer buck standing just off the road.

Mormon crickets may not be the most glamorous residents of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, but they can become an incredibly important source of food when birds need it most.

As summer fades, many birds are finishing their molt and building the fat reserves they need for migration. An abundance of crickets can provide a timely burst of protein and energy, one small piece of the enormous ecological puzzle playing out across the landscape.

A fungus with a two-plant life story.

Those brilliant orange spots on this hawthorn aren’t autumn color, they’re part of the life cycle of cedar-hawthorn rust (Gymnosporangium globosum).

This rust fungus needs two hosts to complete its life cycle: a juniper and a member of the rose family, such as hawthorn. Spores move between the two hosts throughout the growing season, allowing the fungus to complete its remarkably complex life cycle.

Here in the Greater Yellowstone region, native black/Douglas hawthorn (Crataegus douglasii) is an important shrub in riparian and forest-edge communities around the Tetons, making these tiny fungal interactions another piece of the ecological story happening around us.

Sometimes you just have to slow down and look closely.

Fireweed

There’s poetry in the name. Fireweed blooms upward along its tall stem, unfurling from bottom to top much like flames climbing upward through a landscape.

And when the blooms fade, its fruiting bodies open into silky, wind-borne seeds that look like tiny wisps of smoke rising from the plant.

A flower shaped by fire, named for it, and perfectly at home in the landscapes where fire has left its mark.
