Basket weaving has been an essential part of Hawaiian culture for centuries, deeply rooted in tradition and practical use. The art of weaving baskets was passed down through generations, with each family or community honing their unique styles and techniques. Traditionally, Hawaiians used natural materials such as olona (a strong fiber plant), hau (a hibiscus tree), and ti leaves to craft everything from simple storage baskets to intricate containers used for ceremonial purposes.

The process of basket weaving was not just a craft but a spiritual practice, with weavers often infusing their work with mana, or spiritual energy. The patterns and designs used in Hawaiian baskets often held symbolic meaning, representing connections to the land, the sea, and the ancestors. The baskets were used for a variety of purposes, including gathering food, storing tools, and even carrying water.

Today, Hawaiian basket weaving remains a cherished tradition, celebrated through hula, cultural festivals, and the continued efforts of artisans who keep the practice alive. This ancient craft serves as a living connection to Hawaiian heritage, reminding us of the resourcefulness and creativity of the people who lived in harmony with the natural world.

Once a lush, wetland paradise filled with fishponds, taro fields, and streams, Waikīkī was originally a thriving agricultural and cultural hub for Native Hawaiians. The name “Waikīkī” means “spouting waters,” referencing the many springs and waterways that once flowed through the area.

In the 1800s, Waikīkī began transforming as Western influence grew—royalty built beachfront homes here, and eventually, it evolved into a destination for visitors. By the early 20th century, it became a booming tourist district, especially after the construction of the Ala Wai Canal drained the wetlands.

Today, Waikīkī is known for its iconic beach, hotels, shopping, and nightlife—but its roots run deep in Hawaiian history and culture.

Kuilau Ridge Jungle Trail to Mount Waiʻaleʻale Viewpiont
The word kuilau (koo-E-lau) means “to string together leaves or grass.” Plant fibers were used for everything from thatching roofs (pili grass huts) to making large sails for ocean voyaging canoes (from the hala [tree] leaf), so one might imagine that this lush trail originally got its name from native Hawaiians gathering and utilizing natural resources from the area.

After a quick stop at the roadside overlook to observe ‘O’paeka’a Falls, You’ll drive deeper into the island’s verdant trailhead. Your hike begins as a gentle climb up a wide, well-maintained trail. The trail is lined with impressive Sydney blue gum trees (Eucalyptus saligna), which can grow over 150 feet tall, and the occasional smatterings of albizia trees, massive in girth and height.

As you make our way higher, views of several mountain ranges begin to emerge. On overcast days, your still be rewarded with densely green views of the heavily foliated gulches that dominate the foreground; their abundant native and introduced plant species offer much to discover. These plants include wild orchids, tasty guava (when in season), brilliant ‘ōhiʻa lehua blossoms, the versatile hala tree (used for hats, mats, baskets, and sails for voyaging canoes), and the ti plant (a popular material for making hula skirts, among many other uses).

At the turnaround point, there is a large open area with covered picnic tables and expansive views of Kahili Mountain to the south, Wai’ale’ale Mountain and Mount Kawi to the west and the Makaleha Mountains to the north.

KAUAI’S ULTIMATE SOUTH ISLAND ZODIAC BOAT SNORKEL ADVENTURE | KAUAI ZODIAC TOURZ

Kauaʻi South Island Snorkel Adventure takes you on a three-hour tour to see the Queen’s Summer Home from Allerton Bay, alongside the famous Spouting Horn and, weather permitting, out to Kipu Kai. Snorkeling in Kauai is a must and we found two of the best remote snorkeling locations in sunny Poipu.

Encounter occasional dolphins, lots of turtles, and an abundance of exotic Hawaiian reef fish and eels. Snorkel Sheraton Caverns, known as Honu Hale – home of the turtles.

There is so much to see on these southern coasts in terms of pristine reefs and off-shore caverns that snorkeling in these areas becomes a true pleasure. Add to this the fact that these shorelines are mostly navigable and calm the whole year long, and you’ll soon start to appreciate the focus of Kauai Z-Tourz’ “modus operandi.” The fish in these areas are plentiful, the reefs are gorgeous, and the weather is almost always sunny and beautiful.

In Hawaiʻi, kalo is more than just a plant it is an ancestor, a symbol of life, and a sacred connection to the land.

According to Hawaiian genealogy, Haloa, the first kalo plant, was the elder sibling of the Hawaiian people. This makes kalo a literal and spiritual root of our existence.

Traditionally grown in loʻi (irrigated terraces), kalo has fed generations and taught us the values of patience, hard work, and sustainability. Every part of the plant is used with care — from the nutritious corm (root) to the leafy tops — and nothing is wasted.

Poi, made by pounding the cooked corm, has been a staple of the Hawaiian diet and a sacred offering in ceremonies. It’s not just food — it’s culture, identity, and resilience.

Let’s continue to honor and protect kalo, the land it grows on, and the traditions it carries.
