Today we celebrate King Kamehameha Day and honor the legacy of King Kamehameha I, the leader who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 and laid the foundation for the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

Established as a state holiday in 1871 by King Kamehameha V, this special day continues to celebrate Hawaiian culture, history, strength, and unity through floral parades, hula, music, ceremonies, and the traditional draping of lei on the King Kamehameha statues across Hawaiʻi.

King Kamehameha was known not only as a powerful warrior and strategist, but also as a leader who created peace and stability throughout the islands. His legacy still lives on today through the values of unity, resilience, leadership, and aloha.

As we celebrate throughout the islands, we remember the importance of preserving Hawaiian culture, honoring our history, and passing these traditions down to future generations. 🌺🤍

Happy King Kamehameha Day from Hawaiʻi. 👑

Mango season and lychee season in Hawaiʻi just might be the sweetest part of summer!

There’s nothing like grabbing fresh local fruit straight from a Hawaiʻi farmers market while on vacation. Juicy mangoes, sweet lychee, tropical treats, local snacks, fresh flowers, handmade goods, and the true flavors of the islands all in one place.

One of the best ways to experience Hawaiʻi is by supporting local farmers and small businesses while tasting fruits picked fresh right here on the islands. If you’re visiting this summer, make sure a farmers market stop is on your itinerary because mango season does not last forever.

Trust us… once you try local Hawaiʻi mango and lychee, store bought will never taste the same again.

On this PRIVATE tour, Makai Sportfishing requires a minimum of 1 person to confirm the tour. Makai Sportfishing’s vessel, the Pi’ikea, can take a maximum of 6 people. Their PRIVATE tour is just that. Makai Sportfishing will close the boat to other groups and keep it to just your group! Once on board, they’ll give a short safety briefing and get on your way.

Typically, they’ll begin setting the lines in the water as you are exiting the outer break wall and officially declare the fishing has started!

Makai Sportfishing will look at the weather, rely on chatter from other captains and make notes of where they were catching fish in the days before to help determine our path for your tour. Based on the length of the trip and time of year you may not be more than one mile or two offshore or you may go 12-15 miles offshore.

80%-90% of what Makai Sportfishing does will be trolling with artificial lures. On occasion they will use dead bait and chunk bait and do a surface jig at the buoys. (When they use live bait, the bait is to be caught first thing in the morning).

Super Snorkel – Ni’ihau + Nāpali Tour

If you’re looking for the biggest, baddest, longest, strongest, wettest, and wildest of all Kauai boat tours, look no further than Holo Holo Charters’ Niihau + Napali Super Tour. This is the tour that put the company on the map and has for years been recognized as one of the most ambitious and impressive boat tours in all of America. Say yes to adventure and come aboard the sleek, sporty, efficient catamaran for an incredible 7-hour Pacific Ocean experience!

The Holo Holo Super Tour combines Kauai’s iconic Napali Coast boat tour experience with an offshore excursion—traveling 17 miles across the Kaulakahi Channel to Lehua Crater Hawaii State Wildlife Sanctuary and the neighboring “Forbidden Island” of Niihau, then back to Port Allen– all in one epic, awe-inspiring, senses-stimulating day!

It will be dawn when you come aboard Holoholo, the company’s namesake 65-foot power catamaran that was designed and built right here on Kauai, specifically for these daily trips across the channel to Lehua, Niihau, and back. Holoholo is clean, spacious, comfortable, and capable– fitted with powerful twin Cummins QSB diesel engines that make it possible for us to cover more than 60 ocean miles on this tour. Holoholo’s hull design and low center of gravity provide for a safe and secure ride with less bouncing and less rolling than on more top-heavy, double-decker boats.

Woven by hand, rooted in tradition, and carried through generations.

The art of basket weaving in Hawaiʻi, known as ulana lauhala, is a deeply respected cultural practice passed down through generations. Using the leaves of the hala tree (pandanus), skilled artisans carefully harvest, dry, soften, and weave each strand by hand — a process that requires patience, precision, and deep knowledge of the craft.

Historically, lauhala weaving was an essential part of daily life in Hawaiʻi. Baskets, mats, hats, and containers were created not only for function, but with intention and meaning. Each weave told a story — of place, family, and tradition — often taught by kūpuna (elders) to ensure the practice lived on.

Today, lauhala weaving continues as both a cultural preservation and an art form, honoring the ʻike (knowledge) of those who came before. Every piece represents time, care, and a connection to the land, reminding us that true craftsmanship is never rushed — it’s woven with purpose.
