Meet Your Guide: Emiel De Pauw

Hi, I'm Emiel. Belgian by passport but out here in Italy trying my absolute best to pass as a local. I'll leave the verdict on how that's going to my Italian co-guides.😅

⚽️ Soccer took up most of my life. Cycling arrived fashionably late and quietly took over from there, and now here I am, guiding instead of tackling and loving every single moment of it.

🇮🇹 Just so you know, if you ask me how to say something in Italian, there's a decent chance I'm actually giving you Roman dialect instead. I never took a single Italian course; everything I know, I picked up just from living here in Rome. So in my head Roman = Italian.

⏰️ Another small confession: I have never once set an alarm for a "clean" number 7:00, 7:05, 7:10, 7:15, all banned. But 7:01, 7:03, 7:07,7:11... those are all perfectly fine. No logic behind it, it just has to be that way.

Ask me my favorite region to guide and it's Tuscany. The food is out of this world, the views over the hills are unreal, and the weather never misses a chance to show off. Slovenia is on my wish list since I haven't gotten to guide there yet. And if I'm being honest, there's a whole stack of countries on our trip map I haven't visited yet.

My favorite trip memory so far: a pasta cooking class where one guest didn't stop filming and photographing her husband. Turns out it was the first time in over 40 years of marriage she'd seen him (attempt to) cook anything. She sent every last photo and video straight to the family group chat!

From the Columbia River to the Badlands, through the mountains, and all the way to a champagne-soaked finish on the other coast, these two crews rode across the entire country. 🍾
 
We saw switchbacks above the Gorge, summit selfies at 9,430 ft, a delicious waterfront lunch spread, and the most colorful roads we’ve ever ridden through. The best part was the people who rode every one of those miles together.

Meet your Guide: Virgie Horward

Hi, I'm Virginie, though you can call me Virgie or V. I'm from Belgium, but I've spent half my life traveling the world. Being outdoors and staying active is a huge part of who I am. You'll find me hiking somewhere, biking, horse riding, hitting the gym, or doing yoga on top of a hill.

🌏️ I learned English while living in Singapore, and for the first five years I spoke it with a Chinese accent.

🥾 For the past 12 years, I've never stayed in one place for more than 3 months at a time.

🧑🏼‍🍳 I'm a foodie who loves cooking healthy meals. Give me three ingredients in the house and I'll turn them into something tasty (and scrumptious).

My favorite place to guide is the Dolomites. I'm from "the flat country," but I'm a mountain girl at heart, so this region was love at first sight. The scenery, hiking deep into the mountains, biking through the valleys and farmland, the food, the culture (Germanic style and language with a strong Italian influence), it's all incredible. People are welcoming too, and even though they're quite direct, they're some of the friendliest I've met.

My favorite trip memory was on my first trip to Provence, guiding to Mont Ventoux; I could feel how much our guests had put into getting there. Reaching the top of Ventoux was their whole goal for the trip. The weather wasn't on our side that day, but every single guest made it to the summit, and there were tears when they did. Watching that joy up close is what made me realize just how meaningful this job really is. I love what I do, and I can't wait to share that passion with more guests.

That's a wrap on Portugal! 🇵🇹

Our time this season in Alentejo, in photos: riding through tunnels of cork trees, espresso breaks in whitewashed villages, hand-painted tiles around every corner, a visit to Évora's famous Chapel of Bones 💀, and plenty of petiscos to refuel. Most of all, it was a week of big smiles. 🚴☀️

Meet Your Guide: Pauwel Datema

Hi! I'm Pauwel, and I am 34 years old. I'm Dutch, but living with my Portuguese partner and daughter in Alentejo Portugal. I obviously love cycling and sharing that passion with other people, whether it's racing, touring, or discovering.

📺️ An episode of the TV show Dirty Jobs on San Francisco bike messengers convinced me to build a fixed-gear bicycle, which kind of kicked off all my cycling-related adventures (If I could, I would always ride a fixie).

🚗 Next to cycling, I have a big passion for cars, specifically Alfa Romeo. So much so that my daughter knew most car brands before she could count to 10.

🍁 Autumn is easily my favourite cycling season. Fresh mornings, coloured leaves and the dream of fitness in the new year.

Favorite place to guide: As a first-year guide, I can only choose between the two trips that I've done, and I have to choose Portugal, because I love the country and the people who are so warm and will do everything to make you feel at home.

My Favorite trip memory: My favorite thing about trips is meeting a lot of different people who each bring unique life stories that are heartwarming, inspiring, and from time to time outrageously funny as well. I am super happy I get to hear these stories and that I can be a part of these moments as well.
