Mahi Mahi While Bottom Fishing!

One of the surprises of offshore fishing is that you never know what might show up behind the boat.

Today, while bottom fishing, we were treated to a beautiful mahi mahi (dolphin fish). These colorful fish are not something we catch every day in Orange Beach, which makes them even more special when they decide to join the party.

Mahi mahi are known for their incredible colors, hard fights, and acrobatic jumps once hooked. Several factors can increase your chances of finding them, including warm water temperatures, clear blue water, w**d lines, floating debris, and the time of year. When all those ingredients come together, magic can happen offshore.

Most people think of bottom fishing and mahi mahi as two completely different types of fishing, but every now and then a curious mahi will swim up to investigate the boat and turn an ordinary day into a memorable one.

The Gulf always has a few surprises left in it.

After all these years of fishing, I still get excited when something unusual comes over the rail.

Depending on where your from, this grouper is called a Strawberry Grouper, Graysby, and a kitty mitchell and isn’t something we catch every day.

The customers enjoyed seeing a fish that many anglers go years without catching. Moments like this remind me that fishing is about more than bringing home dinner. It’s about the experience, the surprises, and the stories you tell afterward.

Today, this beautiful fish was part of the story.

Caught and released a shark today.

The customers loved it. Watching a powerful fish swim away healthy is something people usually remember for a long time.

A lot of anglers
get frustrated with sharks because sometimes they eat hooked fish before we can land them. That is just part of fishing offshore.

We try to use moments like this as an opportunity to teach about the ecosystem instead of getting angry about it.

Sharks are part of the Gulf. They are predators, scavengers, and an important part of the balance offshore.

At the end of the day, deep sea fishing is not always just about filling the cooler. Sometimes it is about seeing something wild, learning something new, and making memories together.

Pretty neat seeing this one swim away strong today.

“Caught our first Cubbyu fish today.

In all our years offshore, this is the first one we have ever seen anyone catch.

One of the fun parts about deep sea fishing is you never know what might come over the rail next. Sometimes it is not the biggest fish that makes the biggest memory.

We enjoy seeing rare species like this and our customers usually do too.”

Most people never think about what goes on down in a boat’s engine room while they are out fishing. Truth is, that’s a good thing.

Over the years, technology has made it easier for captains to stay ahead of problems before they become bigger ones. One upgrade I really appreciate is having a live camera view of our engine room at the helm.

Years ago, if a hose clamp or a belt failed, you often would not know something was wrong until you slowed down, opened the hatch, and physically checked everything.

Now I can keep an eye on the engine room in real time while still focusing on what matters most, is taking care of our guests and making sure families are having a good experience onboard.

A lot of what makes a charter boat dependable is not flashy. It is maintenance, preparation, and paying attention to the little things before they become big things.

Peace of mind matters offshore.

Lane snapper are not something we catch every day off Orange Beach, but every now and then one shows up while we are fishing for vermilion snapper.

They are one of the prettiest fish in the Gulf in my opinion. Bright yellow stripes, pink sides, and a completely different look than most of the snapper species people are used to seeing.

A lot of folks have never even heard of one until it comes over the rail.

Fish like this are a good reminder that offshore fishing is never exactly the same twice. You can fish the same area for years and still see something that catches your attention.

Beautiful fish caught aboard Distraction Charters today.

Another fine catch of snappers ! Love it when they go to biting.

One of the things we enjoy most about running offshore from Orange Beach is getting to see nature at its best.

This spotted dolphin showed up in our wake headed offshore with us this morning. Moments like this remind us that a fishing trip is about more than just catching fish. It is about getting away from the noise for a little while and experiencing the Gulf the way it was meant to be experienced.

Sometimes the memories people talk about most are not even the fish. It is the dolphins surfing the wake, kids laughing, flying fish skipping across the water, or simply watching the sunrise on the ride out.

We never know exactly what we are going to see out there, and honestly, that is part of what makes every trip special.

Just saw a magnificent frigatebird. These birds often have a 6-7 foot wingspan.

Most families booking a fishing charter never think about what happens behind the scenes to keep a boat prepared and operational.

Today was routine service day for part of our onboard fire suppression and safety equipment.

A lot of people are surprised to learn that many safety items passengers assume are onboard a charter boat are not always federally required on 6 passenger vessels. Every captain and business owner makes their own decisions about how they equip and maintain their operation.

At Distraction Charters, we have always believed in going beyond the minimum requirements when it comes to preparation, maintenance, and safety.

That includes things like:
• AED onboard
• EPIRB satellite emergency beacon
• First aid supplies
• Regularly serviced fire suppression equipment
• Preventive maintenance schedules
• New life raft

None of those things catch fish.

But we believe they matter when families trust us with the people they care about most.

Our goal has always been simple:
Run a clean, well-maintained boat.
Make calm decisions.
Create great memories.
And do things the right way, even when nobody is watching.
