Lovin’ Hip Camp!

Most people think of luxury as a fancy resort, room service, or a five-star hotel.

My version of luxury looks a little different.

This weekend it was parking my van in a vineyard, watching the sunset paint the sky behind the mountain, wandering through an old western town, and knowing tomorrow starts with a paddle.

One of the unexpected gifts of teaching SUP Foundations classes and creating SUP The Map videos is discovering places like this. I get to stay on unique properties, experience small-town gems, and enjoy the kind of quiet that seems harder and harder to find.

I love HIP Camp because it allows me to travel solo, feel safe, and stay in places I never would have discovered otherwise.

I have a home, but on the weekends I get to live a different kind of life. One filled with paddleboards, mountain views, winding backroads, vineyards, campfires, and the simple joy of exploring somewhere new.

The older I get, the more I realize luxury isn’t about things.

It’s about experiences.

And this feels pretty luxurious to me. 💙

SUP the Map: Cold Springs – Chasing Sunshine in Southern Oregon

Sometimes the weather changes your plans.

After canceling a SUP Foundations class due to thunderstorm threats, I decided to chase the sunshine south to Cold Springs at Collier Memorial State Park. It turned out to be one of those paddles that reminds you why it’s always worth getting on the water.

Cold Springs is a spring-fed river with crystal-clear, turquoise water that looks more like a swimming pool than a river. The water is cold year-round, but that’s what makes it so incredibly clear and beautiful.

This paddle is a four-mile round trip, with two miles paddling upstream to the headwaters and two miles back. The highlight of the paddle is reaching the source, where water bubbles up directly from the ground to feed the river. Watching the springs emerge beneath the surface is mesmerizing, and I was able to capture some incredible underwater photos and video of the bubbling headwaters.

The paddle itself was peaceful with just a little wind, plenty of sunshine, and beautiful scenery from start to finish. There’s free parking, clean restrooms right at the launch area, and easy access to the water.

A few things to know before you go:

• Plan for a 4-mile round-trip paddle.
• The water is extremely cold, even on hot days.
• Check the weather forecast before launching. Conditions can change quickly in this area.
• Wind can make the return paddle more challenging.
• Mornings typically offer the calmest conditions.

SUP the Map Score: 4.5/5 ⭐

The only reason Cold Springs doesn’t receive a perfect 5 out of 5 is its location. Being tucked away in southern Oregon makes it a destination paddle for many paddlers.

But if you’re willing to make the drive, you’ll be rewarded with turquoise water, bubbling headwaters, peaceful surroundings, and one of the most unique paddling experiences in Oregon.

This one is absolutely a must-paddle—and that’s why it makes SUP the Map.
