If you visit Mexico during Día de los Mu***os, you will see her everywhere: La Catrina. But this elegant skeleton in her grand, feathered hat is much more than a holiday costume; she is a piece of political satire and the ultimate symbol of how Mexican culture embraces death.

Created in the early 1900s by cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada, the original "calavera" was drawn to mock locals who abandoned their indigenous heritage to adopt aristocratic European fashions. Posada’s message was simple: no matter how much wealth you accumulate or who you pretend to be, we all end up as skeletons in the end.

She was fully immortalized in the 1940s when legendary artist Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo's husband) painted her into the center of his massive 15-meter mural, Dreams of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, capturing 400 years of Mexican history.

Traveler Tip: You do not have to wait for November to see Rivera's masterpiece. You can view this incredible fresco year-round at the Museo Mural Diego Rivera, located right by Alameda Central in the historic center of Mexico City.

La Catrina is a beautiful, striking reminder to drop the pretenses, live as your true self, and embrace the fact that death is the great equalizer.
