Today, we join the world in mourning the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.

For more than three decades, King Harald served his nation with incredible dignity, wisdom, warmth, and an unwavering devotion to his people. As Europe's oldest reigning monarch, his legacy of leadership, humility, and compassion has left an unforgettable mark not just on Norway, but across the entire continent.

For all of us at Europe Bound Journeys, Norway holds a profoundly special place in our hearts. At first glance the stave churches of Norway look like something straight off the set of Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. But look closer and you'll find an intriguing world all it's own!

1️⃣ The "Black" Color is Secret Armor: Their distinct dark hue comes from centuries of thick layers of pine tar. The original builders coated the wood to protect it from rot, dampness, and harsh Scandinavian winters.

2️⃣Built Like Viking Ships: Constructed around 1100–1300 AD, these churches were built by craftsmen who used the exact same woodworking genius that created legendary Viking longships.

3️⃣ Zero Nails Attached: These monumental buildings were engineered entirely out of wood using complex timber joints, sills, and interlocking vertical planks ("staves"), without using a single metal nail.

4️⃣ Viking Gods vs. Christian Icons: Because they were built during Norway's transition to Christianity, look closely at structures like the famous Borgund Stave Church. You'll find Christian crosses standing right alongside beautifully carved pagan dragon heads designed to ward off evil spirits.

5️⃣ A Rare, Surviving Legacy: Historians estimate there were once up to 2,000 stave churches scattered across northwestern Europe. Tragically, due to the Black Death, fires, and decay over the centuries, only 28 remain standing today, almost exclusively in Norway.
