Turkey, you gave us quite a farewell. 🇹🇷⛵

Our grand finale unfolded in Bodrum, exploring the harbor, stepping into the past at St. Peter Castle and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and strolling along the pier. One more day of discoveries before taking our celebration out onto the water.

And what a celebration it was. A gulet cruise, wonderful food, and—best of all—the company of the remarkable travelers who have shared this journey.

With the coastline around us, there was time to reflect on everything we’d experienced: the extraordinary history, the generous welcomes, the meals we helped prepare, and the conversations that brought us closer to Turkish life. So many moments we couldn’t have anticipated. So much more than photographs to bring home.

Somewhere between Istanbul and this last afternoon together, unfamiliar faces had become familiar friends. That might be the most beautiful part of all.

We leave with hearts full of feeling and minds still turning over everything we’ve learned. Turkey has given us plenty to wonder about—and every reason to keep exploring.

A walk through the ancient world. A wade through something otherworldly. 🇹🇷

Yesterday, our Turkey Detour brought us to Hierapolis, a thriving city in Roman times where thermal springs attracted visitors more than 2,000 years ago. Long before the modern spa getaway, people were making their way here for the waters. Some travel traditions have serious staying power!

Inside the archaeological museum, housed in ancient Roman baths, sculptures and everyday objects brought another dimension to the ruins outside. A chance to look closer—not just at what this civilization built, but at what its people created, used, and treasured.

Then it was our turn to get our feet wet. We waded through the mineral-rich waters of Pamukkale, surrounded by brilliant white travertine terraces shaped by deposits from the springs. Nature’s own extraordinary handiwork—and quite a change of scenery from the ancient city above.

An amazing lunch in Denizli brought us back around the table, with plenty from the morning to talk about. History, a little adventure, and the pleasure of sharing it all over a wonderful meal.

Sometimes, a deeper connection to a place begins with a closer look. Sometimes, with your toes in the water.

Marble masterpieces, ancient faith, and an evening with a different kind of rhythm. 🇹🇷

Yesterday, our Turkey Detour took us to Aphrodisias, a city dedicated to Aphrodite whose sculptors were celebrated throughout the Roman Empire. Exploring its ruins and museum, we could see why.

At Laodicea, we continued our journey into early Christian history. Here lived one of the seven Christian communities addressed in the Book of Revelation. Walking through the ancient city brought another familiar name off the page and into the landscape—a reminder that these stories belonged to real people, in places we can still explore today.

Then came a welcome change of pace: settling into our wonderful Lycus River Thermal Hotel, followed by a mesmerizing whirling dervish performance, rooted in centuries of Sufi tradition. After a day among the remains of ancient civilizations, we encountered a tradition still expressed through movement and music.

We finished around the dinner table, sharing a scrumptious meal and reflecting on everything we’d discovered. There’s something special about these evenings together, when the day’s sights become conversations—and fellow travelers become friends.

A full day for curious minds, followed by a very happy table. That’s our kind of detour.

It’s one thing to read about the ancient world. It’s another to step inside its homes. 🇹🇷

Yesterday, Ephesus drew us deeper into Turkey’s extraordinary past. Once a thriving Roman port and an important center of early Christianity, this was a city where people traded, gathered, debated, and helped shape a changing world. Its monumental ruins invite you to imagine the bustle that once filled these streets.

The Terrace Houses brought that history wonderfully close. Intricate mosaics, beautifully painted walls, and even underfloor heating revealed the homes of wealthy Roman residents. Clearly, an appreciation for art—and a little comfort—is nothing new! Beyond the grandeur, we found ourselves imagining the conversations, family meals, and everyday routines that unfolded here.

At the Basilica of Saint John, our conversation turned to faith and the region’s place in early Christian history. Built in the sixth century over the traditional burial site of John the Apostle, this once-magnificent church became an important destination for pilgrims. Standing among its remains gave us another perspective on the beliefs that brought people here across the centuries.

These are the days we treasure: time to look closely, ask questions, and discover the human stories behind extraordinary places.

The deeper we go, the more there is to discover.
