The best way to get to know a place? Meet the people who call it home.

Thanks to Florin, our wonderful local connection, we spent a day discovering village life in Maramureș—one person, one story, one craft at a time. From Vasile, the village poet and chronicler, to the local weaver, wood-shingle makers, and farmers we met along the way, there was so much to learn and appreciate.

These are the days we love: time to slow down, follow our curiosity, and connect with people whose paths we might never otherwise cross.

Thank you, Florin, and everyone who shared a little of their world with us. What a day! ❤️

When you travel slow, allowing for time and things to come to you, and some detours to unfold, you might make friends with an amazing kid and a village dog. In this case both of those having my back in returing me to the place I am staying at.

History through the lens of a salt mine: Rome (Emperor Trajan) does its "Veni, Vini, Vici" in Dacia (not the car, but literally the place) a little more than 100 years after Christ and finds gold, and even better - SALT! (as precious but tons of it). More salt than the world could consume.

Fast forward! WWI concludes and with the House of Habsburg's (now Austria) fall, and salt exploited for cheap somewhere else, this place shutters. Another 100 years, and we get to enjoy a view at an incredible site of a Salt Mine turned disneyesque type of a show - ferris wheel and everything.

The Salina Turda Salt Mines were turned into an attraction for tourists, but deep within her salty layers, she provides for a history lesson to those who care to look and listen. You definitely will appreciate a guide who can give context, and the right views through history's many windows, to comprehend not only he importance of salt and this place, but to see empires rise and fall around a precious commodity we all depend on - salt.

This was a Detour worth taking! A Detour that gave us one more piece to the puzzle that is modern-day Romania and it's colorful past.

Returning to Sighisoara for years, we wondered if magic can perish, and we are happy to report that as long as the community is there, magic will never be gone. Thank you, to all the parents, students, and administrators who make ordinary magic happen all year long for all of us tourists to tap into every now and then. Thank you Sighisoara. Thank you, teachers and administrators! You are the soul to this community! (And the random cat, of course!)

Our stay in Sighişoara was AMAZING! Unpacking for three days on the hill-top, is the key. Locals greet you with a surprised smile, seeing you for a third morning, seeing you as an inquisitive traveler, one not impressed by Dracula, yet not opposed to folklore that is and always will be core to the place. Indescribable, but easy to understand if you make the effort of visiting the right way. Slow travel! 🇹🇩

Little Paris, you gave us the perfect welcome to Romania! We are off to Sibiu, Sighisoara, Maramures, Bukovina, Brasov, and back to the "Little" City of Lights - Bucharest.

Put Bucharest on your places to visit next year! Worth it! And then see the rest of Romania as well!

Travel can be unpredictable, including back-to-back cancellations and spending four days in airports. Happy to be here though...

Travel is best thing you can do for yourself. The best recess. You might need Zen after this though : Your initial flight of two legs can't even get off the ground and Delta Air Lines can't get you to your destination within two days!?? If we, a small travel company, would handle customer service and product delivery like the "big guys", we'd loose everything we have-our reputation and future bookings. We know things can go sideways in travel, hence send our trip leaders days in advance to be in locale for our tours, but TWO DAYS delay-and we are not there yet-really puts us in jeapordy. Not cool, Delta Air Lines One plane grounded due to mechanical, two days delay for us. No apologies. No comments. No compensation. Business as usual.
