A five-star hotel and a Forbes Five-Star hotel are not necessarily the same thing.

Forbes Travel Guide (Forbes Travel Guide) created the original Five-Star hospitality rating system in 1958. Today, its anonymous inspectors evaluate luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruise ships against up to 900 objective standards.

The properties cannot pay to participate or purchase a rating. Every Forbes Travel Guide Star Rating is earned through an independent inspection, with greater emphasis placed on service and how the experience makes a guest feel.

It may still be summer, and 93 today in Texas, but I am already locking in Christmas week chalets, retaining private ski instructors and confirming helicopter transfers for families who will not see snow for months.

That is the part of high-level ski travel most people do not see.

The week itself should feel effortless. Boots warmed before anyone reaches the ski room. Dinner reservations already secured. The same instructor returning year after year who remembers how everyone skis, and which grandchild wants hot chocolate after the morning run.

But that does not happen by accident. It happens because dozens of decisions were made months earlier.

With peak ski weeks, the real constraint is rarely budget. It is availability.

By autumn, much of the architecture of Christmas, New Year and Presidents’ Week is already set. The best instructors are committed. The most sought-after chalets and suites are spoken for. Prime dining times and private experiences become increasingly difficult to secure.

What stood out most during my most recent stay at The Monarch San Antonio (The Monarch San Antonio) was not the design or dining. It was the access.

The hotel has a Les Clefs d’Or (Les Clefs d’Or) concierge team, part of a global network known for making the seemingly impossible happen. In San Antonio, that could mean private rooftop stargazing with an astronomer or access to a Spurs warm-up before watching the game from a luxury suite.

Our in-house Director of Concierge Services handles planning before arrival, while my direct relationship with The Monarch’s team strengthens what can happen on the ground.

That combination of planning, relationships and local access is what turns a beautiful hotel stay into something far more memorable.

Twenty-five years.

These photos are from the first time we took Jordan to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

He was (and still is) too young to understand the full weight of where he stood, but one day he will. We will tell him and Christian about the lives lost, the families forever changed, the courage shown and why we continue to remember.

Today, we honor the 2,977 people who never came home, the first responders who ran toward danger and all those who have carried the loss ever since.

We also remember the many lives affected, sacrifices made and losses suffered throughout the Global War that followed. It certainly changed trajectory for Scotty and his Special Warfare brothers. For their service and protection, we will always be grateful.
