We woke up to perfect sea conditions and took our time enjoying the changing colors of Punta Colorado reflecting the rising sun. After a hike exploring an arroyo and admiring fossils, it was high time for a relaxing dip in the Sea of Cortez. Just to prove we are not always serious wildlife chasers, the group initiated a boisterous diving competition. A short jaunt to Las Ánimas gave us great interactions with the local sea lions and fur seals. An afternoon of whale watching resulted in close encounters with a Bryde’s whale, as well as a juvenile blue whale. We prepared for another amazing dinner from Chef Josh on anchor, with mobula rays and flying fish cruising in the lights.

Our first full day in the Sea of Cortez started at dawn on La Paz Bay. Everyone got to encounter whale sharks, either swimming with them or admiring their feeding habits from the panga. We then spent some time at the Isla Espiritu Santo frigate colony. There were hundreds of birds, either resting or riding the thermals above the aquamarine water.

We made a lunch move up the island to Los Islotes for an afternoon with the sea lions. Everyone enjoyed an up-close view of their graceful play during the sunset snorkel. Thinking the wildlife viewing was done for the day, we were quickly proved wrong by a school of mobula rays circling the boat in our evening anchorage.

Looking forward to the most scenic cup of coffee at Punta Colorado for sunrise tomorrow morning.

Friday evening, 2/20/26, we departed San Diego on our Baja Whale Tour #2! After checking into Ensenada Saturday morning, we headed south aboard Searcher, observing wildlife along the way.

Sunday morning we woke to a beautiful sunrise and pleasant weather just north of San Benitos Island. We were treated to a group of three adult humpbacks breaching, pec-slapping, and tail-lobbing. We paused our journey to enjoy their antics as Pacific white-sided dolphins cruised by. The rest of the day was spent hiking the island itself, taking in the scenery and encountering elephant and fur seals. We continued our southward journey with following seas.

Tuesday was another wonderful day in Laguna San Ignacio. Our morning started with a visit from a cow-calf pair, who joined us as we enjoyed our dawn coffee. Some folks chose to continue enjoying the bountiful gray whales currently calling the lagoon home, while others ventured into the mangroves. Drifting along the clear, shallow water and listening to the songs of mangrove warblers was very peaceful.

Today we are off Bahía Magdalena, traveling south. We have encountered many humpbacks and had our first sighting of the largest mammal on Earth, the blue whale! We remain southbound, with a pelican mascot perched on our starboard corner.

Our 2nd to last day of the trip, we got in on the blue whales after our morning activities at Agua Verde. Awesome to see these animals year after year in the same places each year. We saw three today and ended our afternoon on bottlenose dolphins and a large pod of common dolphins. We are anchored up for our back deck barbecue, and it’s margarita night! Beautiful weather again.

Thursday, 2/12/26, we started at Punta Colorado on Isla San Jose. We had some great bioluminescence before the sun came up and watched the sunrise at the big red bluff at Punta Colorado. We did a mid-morning tour around Los Animas to check out the fur seals. Then in the afternoon, we came across a large group of 100+ pilot whales. They stayed around the boat for 2 hours. A few miles away we encountered a pair of s***m whales, which gave us some close looks. We even had a Bryde’s whale close to the boat. We ended with dinner and a swim at Tombobiche in the evening.
