We spend most of our lives being asked for something—our attention, our time, our next reply. Out here, nothing's asking. You can just look. At a hawk riding a thermal, at light through fog, at whatever's on the other side of the binoculars.

It doesn't take much. A few hours, a quiet trail, and a reason to lift your eyes past the horizon of your own to-do list is all it really takes to come back to yourself and nature.

Meet your guide, Matthew 🦅

Matthew’s path into this work started back in 2012, of all places, on the back of a horse. He spent a season as a horseback guide and stagecoach driver in Yellowstone, and something about sharing that landscape with people stuck with him. Since then he's worked as an educator all over the country: Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City, the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, and both the Blank Park Zoo and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden back in Iowa.

He studied Animal Ecology at Iowa State, but if you really want to see him come alive, ask him about birds. He's an avid birder through and through, and he'll happily stop mid-hike to point one out to you—usually before you'd have ever noticed it yourself.

Outside of guiding, you'll find him with a book in hand, working on a woodworking project, or planning the next place he wants to explore. But ask him what he loves most about the job, and he won't hesitate—it's the people, and getting to adventure alongside them every single day.

Behold the Giant Green Anemone🪸

Part predator, part solar panel, this is one of the most extraordinary creatures you'll find in the Pacific Northwest tide pools, and one of our absolute favorite things to show people on the Oregon Coast.

That brilliant green color comes from symbiotic algae living inside its own tissues—meaning this animal is essentially solar powered.

These have been inhabiting the tide pools of the Oregon Coast for millions of years and they are just as wild up close as they look. Come find one with us. 🐚
