Fall and winter bring a quieter, wilder side of the park to life, from changing forests and crisp mountain air to snow-covered landscapes and trails that feel worlds away from the summer crowds.

And with a naturalist guide along for the day, there’s so much more to notice: the geology beneath your feet, seasonal changes in the landscape, local wildlife, and the stories that make this place what it is.

If you think of Deception Pass as just a summer destination, look a little closer. 🐦🌊

Fall and winter bring a whole different cast of characters to the islands as migratory and wintering birds arrive along the Salish Sea. The rocky shorelines, tidal waters, forests, and wetlands around Deception Pass provide important habitat for everything from seabirds and shorebirds to raptors.

And there’s something pretty special about watching them here. Winter storms can make the water rough and dramatic, while quieter shorelines give you more opportunity to slow down and notice what’s moving through the landscape.

For naturalists, fall and winter are a fascinating time to explore Deception Pass because you’re seeing the ecosystem in a completely different seasonal rhythm.

The North Cascades are heading into their quiet season, but we’re already thinking about what they’ll look like when they thaw. 🏔️

Come summer, the snow pulls back from the valleys, alpine meadows wake up, waterfalls swell with snowmelt, and the North Cascades reveal the full scale of what makes this region known as the “American Alps.”

We’re excited to start offering small-group North Cascades tours in 2027, so if you’ve been meaning to explore this corner of Washington, consider this your sign to put it on the summer list.

Meet your guide, Calvin!

As a Seattle native, Calvin grew up exploring the landscapes he now gets to share with others, from hiking and backpacking to leading kayak tours around the Pacific Northwest.

He went on to earn a B.S. in Environmental Science from Binghamton University, combining his love for the outdoors with a deeper understanding of the environments he’s always loved exploring.

When he’s not guiding, you’ll probably find Calvin backpacking, climbing, or playing soccer.

Snoqualmie Falls hits different once the rain comes back to the PNW. 🌧️💧

Fall and winter rainfall feeds the Snoqualmie River, often giving the falls a fuller, more powerful flow. Add mist rising from the gorge, changing colors along the surrounding forest, and the cooler weather of the Cascades, and it’s a completely different experience from a summer visit.

Then there’s the other half of the day: Washington w**e country. 🍷

As the vineyards move into the quieter months after harvest, tasting rooms become an especially cozy place to slow down, warm up, and taste your way through the region.

Mount Rainier doesn’t just change colors in the fall. Its entire ecosystem starts preparing for winter. 🍂

As temperatures drop, wildflowers give way to seed and dormancy, wildlife shifts its behavior, and the forests transition into a quieter season. Higher elevations begin collecting snow while lower-elevation forests can still be full of fall color, creating an incredible contrast across the mountain.

One of our favorite things about exploring Rainier outside of summer is getting to see those seasonal adaptations up close. Same mountain, completely different experience.

Winter is a beautiful time to explore Deception Pass and Whidbey Island. Start the day birdwatching in Skagit Valley, then follow your naturalist guide along rugged shorelines and forest trails, with time to take in the area’s history and sweeping Salish Sea views.

Enjoy a locally sourced picnic lunch, visit a historic fort and lighthouse, and finish the day with a ferry ride back toward Seattle.

In a single autumn day in Olympic National Park, you can move from moss-covered temperate rainforest to rugged Pacific coastline, with mountain ecosystems in between.

This season, each one starts responding to the changing season in its own way. Rain returns to the rainforest, rivers swell, coastal weather gets wilder, and higher elevations begin their transition toward winter.

It’s one of the best times of year to notice just how much life is packed into this corner of Washington, and how dramatically the landscape can change within a few miles.

Not so hot take: The Oregon Coast is at its best when the weather gets a little moody. 🌊

By fall, Oregon’s coastal forests are getting greener with the return of rain, and the Pacific starts showing off a little more. Stormy skies, dramatic surf, misty trails, and long stretches of beach with far fewer people on them.

It’s also a beautiful time to see how connected the coast’s ecosystems really are, from old-growth forest and coastal dunes to rocky shorelines shaped by wind and waves.

If you want the Oregon Coast as it actually feels in the Pacific Northwest, October through winter is a pretty hard season to beat.

Meet your guide, Chris!

Chris grew up in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, where a love for exploring the outdoors started early. Before joining Evergreen Escapes, he spent time as a cave tour guide, sharing stories of the geology beneath our feet. Now, he gets to explore the other side of it, introducing guests to the landscapes and geological wonders of the Cascade Range.
