đłď¸ Cruise facts most people donât know⌠and some of these still amaze me.
Iâve been around cruising enough to realize that what we experience as passengers is only a SMALL part of whatâs happening onboard.
Thereâs an entire world behind those crew-only doors that most guests never see.
Here are some of my favorites:
đ˝ď¸ A cruise ship is basically a floating city.
Think about feeding thousands of people every single day⌠breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, specialty restaurants, crew meals, drinks and everything in between.
And when one sailing ends, the ship has to restock and prepare for the next group in just a few hours.
đ There are huge parts of the ship you never see.
Behind the passenger areas are crew hallways, massive kitchens, laundry facilities, storage areas, engineering spaces and more.
Some ships even have their own crew-only âhighwaysâ running through the ship.
đ The laundry operation is INSANE.
Imagine washing the towels, sheets, napkins and uniforms for thousands of people.
Thatâs happening constantly behind the scenes.
đ§ Some ships can make their own freshwater.
They can take seawater and process it onboard, helping supply the ship with the water needed throughout the voyage.
âťď¸ Your leftovers donât simply disappear.
Modern cruise ships have systems to process food waste and wastewater onboard. There is a whole operation dedicated to managing what thousands of people produce every day.
â Getting a massive cruise ship into port is a whole operation.
It isnât simply âpull up and park.â
The bridge team, port personnel and sometimes tugboats all work together to safely maneuver these enormous ships.
đ Some ships can connect to electricity from the port.
When the ship and port have the right infrastructure, shore power can allow the ship to use electricity from land while docked.
đ And while youâre sleeping, the ship is still working.
The bridge, engine room, galley, housekeeping, security and other departments continue operating around the clock.
Your vacation might feel like everything is happening effortlesslyâŚ
But behind the scenes, there are thousands of moving parts making that experience possible.
And honestly, the more I learn about cruising, the more impressed I am by the operation behind it.
The next time youâre sitting on your balcony watching the ocean, just rememberâŚ
Youâre not just staying at a hotel.
Youâre staying on a massive floating city thatâs moving you from one destination to the next. đ
