Cruising along the beautiful Danube River and passing through the locks along the way. It’s fascinating to watch how these ships are raised and lowered to navigate the changing water levels. Just another incredible part of this adventure!

We finally slowed down long enough to enjoy the ship! This vacation, I mean researching business is exhausting.

We started on the Emerald Sky the first few days, then moved over to the Emerald Destiny for the remainder of the cruise. I took plenty of pictures for those following along ahead of our Christmas Market River Cruising in 2028. We’ll be sailing with a different cruise line, but this gives you an idea of what river cruising looks like. River ships have a lot in common because they have to fit through locks and under bridges. There’s only so much room to get fancy!

After lunch, we strolled into town for a little exploring and shopping. Apparently, our version of taking a break still involves walking around and spending money.

We topped off the night with a bottle exchange sampling different b**rs and spirits we purchased along the way.

Yesterday we toured Ottakringer Brauerei (brewery) in Vienna, and the history alone was worth the visit. It’s remarkable what they’ve overcome through the years, and hearing their story made us appreciate the experience even more.

But the real surprise…I actually found a b**r I think is delicious! It’s called Radler. Apparently, I just needed to come to Austria to figure this out.

We also walked around downtown and had schnitzel, pommes frites, and German potatoes for lunch. Before we were taken to our new ship, the Emerald Destiny.

We keep saying how much we miss living in Europe just for the food alone!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that, in true Roni fashion, I ended up behind the bar helping the staff! They’ve been stuck on that ship not moving for a month, so I think they appreciated the comic relief. One even put his apron on me, handed me his tray and sat down so I could take his order. It was fantastic!

We packed so much into yesterday that I was too exhausted to post an update!

We started by exploring Bratislava’s Old City. Steve especially enjoyed the history and architecture. The Baroque buildings were a big hit with him!

Then we headed to the village of Cifer for what ended up being such a special experience. Our host, Mr. Ostloff, welcomed us into his home with homemade elderberry water, white w**e, and a cake made with quince he grew himself. We definitely need to figure out how to make that elderberry water when we get home!

He grows his own food and grapes, makes his own w**e, and raises rabbits the size of turkeys. Yes, you read that right! We toured his garden, root cellar, and w**e cellar, where the happiness happens. We also tried his homemade grappa, which actually had flavor!

He shared stories about his wife, their three sons, and two granddaughters, who were freaking adorable in the family pictures he showed us. He also talked about growing up under communism and his days as a chicken farmer, that was his assigned job. These days, he works in energy, and his wife works in pharmaceuticals making collagen. Getting to sit in his home, meet him, and hear about his life made the visit that much more memorable.

Later we joined our group at a local bar offering a challenge: ten shots in one hour. Sadly, we cannot claim to have completed that one! We took over the bar and it started with all of us singing Sweet Caroline.

Well, our river cruise is doing a little less cruising than planned! The Danube is low, so we’re staying docked for the first three days. We knew this was a possibility and decided we were still up for the adventure!

Travel comes with surprises, some small and some significant. You adjust, make the best of it, and keep enjoying the experience. With only 65 passengers onboard and over 50 staff, we’re getting spoiled rotten! I could get used to this kind of attention!

This morning’s excursion took us to Schloss Hof Estate, and this afternoon we’re heading out to walk around and enjoy the town.

The itinerary changed, but we’re still making memories. That’s what we came for!
