For independent travelers who may not know the history - The Star of Bengal was a salmon packer that met its unfortunate end off the coast of Wrangell in 1908, leaving behind over a century-long mystery, and more than 100 people lost in sea. In 2025, a Wrangell-led team rediscovered the Star of Bengal again, and began giving the story, and its people, back their names.

Join us tomorrow in commemorating the 118th anniversary of the Star of Bengal shipwreck! Our local historian from Wrangell History Unlocked, Ronan Rooney, will be hosting a symposium to mark this significant event!

There is also a surprise (rhyme's with well!) that's just returned from conservation, that will be formally unveiled later this winter, but it will be present for this weekends commemoration. More photos to follow!

How do you get to Wrangell if you can't drive to it?

A frequently asked question by curious travelers. While it is true that there is no road system connected for people to drive to the island, there are other, accessible options to get to Wrangell as an independent traveler:

Alaska Airlines: Nicknamed "The Milk Run". A twice-daily commercial flight that connects to Anchorage and Seattle. Most accessible and used option by travelers. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

Alaska Marine Highway System (ferry): Once or twice a week, the ferry will travel and drop off passengers at the Wrangell terminal. The Southeast Alaska ferry route extends all the way from Bellingham, Washington State, to Haines in Southeast Alaska - Wrangell is one of those stops. It requires more planning, but it offers a slower pace of travel through the Inside Passage.

Charter Planes: Private air charters with direct access to Southeast Alaskan communities. This offers independent travelers the most straightforward approach to Wrangell, and it also offers transportation to remote Forest Service cabins nearby the island.

Summer does not leave Wrangell all at once. Evening light fades earlier, fog settles over the harbors, mushrooms emerge across the rainforest floor, and rain jackets return to hooks by the door. Life does not stop when fall arrives. It simply finds a new rhythm.

Last week - Music in the Park happened over at Shoemaker Bay 🎸

A community event for locals, by locals. Special music performances by The Powers, Kaylauna Churchill, Andrei Siekawitch, Kalee Herman, Cooper Powers, Elizabeth Armstrong, and K1NFOLK! It was a beautiful day to watch them all perform!

This potluck-style gathering makes great use of the sunny weather to bring families together for a little community spirit before summer ends. Laid-back, slow-pace, and enjoying the god times. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

Special thanks to Wrangell Parks & Recreation crew for hosting Music in the Park, Wrangell Police Department for bringing the grill and cooking burgers & hotdogs, and to the Wrangell community for bringing their favorite dishes to the potluck!

Some days are good for staying inside.

Other days are good for getting out and enjoy the water.

Don't stay inside. Enjoy that sunshine 🌞
