Ninh Bình was Vietnam's capital before Hanoi was.
Hoa Lư, 968 AD. Two dynasties ruled from here for 42 years before the capital moved north to what is now Hanoi.
The old temple gates are still standing. And yet, most day tours drive straight past.
Then there's Bái Đính - one of Vietnam's largest Buddhist complexes. It's so big that you can take a buggy from the entrance to the main temple. Take it. The walk is nearly 3 km in the sun, and you'll want to save your legs for the rest of the day.
So, what would you rather see in Ninh Bình: the ancient capital, or the famous boat ride?
