Spring has sprung and it’s even more fun to take the kids outdoors! Let’s see what you could be up to this weekend.

Friday: End the week with an outdoor play session at Homestead Park in Oranjezicht. Bring the dogs, pack a little picnic and let the kids explore the massive jungle gym. There is also a little deli across the road for some fresh coffee and treats. 🛝

Saturday: Don’t miss out on the South African National Parks FREE National Parks week which is ending on Sunday. In the Cape Region, you get free access to Agulhas National Park, Bontebok National Park, Table Mountain National Park and Tankwa Karoo National Park over the weekend. Just note that Boulders Penguin Colony Table Mountain Aerial Cableway are excluded from the special. 🏞️

If you want to visit some penguins with the kids, head over to Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty’s Bay. It’s very similar to Boulders Beach but much more affordable and the little black and white fellas are just as cute as their friends in Simon’s Town. 🐧

Sunday: Have some fun at the V&A Waterfront on the weekend and start with some pedal boat action at Pedal Boat Cape Town . They run a R50 special throughout September where you can hop on a pedal boat for 30min and only pay half the price ⚓️

Afterwards, the kids can burn even more energy at be.UP Park - pop.UP Park - a fun indoor play park inside the Watershed building. They charge R120 per hour or R205 for a 2 hour session. 🥳

A tiny walk with a BIG Cape Town story ⛰️✨

Tucked above Vredehoek is the Murray & Stewart Quarry, better known as Vredehoek Quarry. Drive to the end of Chelmsford Road, park at the dirt parking area, then walk past the boom and turn left along the gravel road. About 100 metres on, take the path to the right and you’ll reach it in around 3 minutes.

We walked through the low tunnel to find towering rock walls, a quiet pool and a completely different view of the mountain. It feels like discovering a secret little world just above the city.

But this wasn’t always a quarry: it began as the Vredehoek Tin Mine in 1911. Around 100 people worked here searching for cassiterite, the ore used to produce tin. A deep shaft and horizontal mine passages (known as adits) gave miners access to the rock and helped move ore out. The mine was short-lived, producing only about four tonnes of ore concentrate before operations stopped around World War I.

Later, Murray & Stewart used the site as a stone quarry, extracting hard siltstone for Cape Town buildings until the 1930s. The water? Mountain runoff and groundwater collect in the old excavations and mine workings including a small weir used during the mining days. So the tunnel wasn’t built for water; it was part of the mine/quarry access.

A proper Cape Town adventure for curious kids. But the tunnel is old, low and in rough condition, with loose stones and rusty supports, so sturdy shoes, close supervision and good judgement are essential 🌿

Have you explored this hidden corner of Devil’s Peak?
