We were pretty lucky to be among the first to spend a night at this little gem in the Cederberg with Somerset College

Tucked beneath the eastern side of Tafelberg, is the community of Langkloof, and they have a new Tented Camp. This is a community-run campsite that is opening to the public soon.

A huge amount of work has gone into getting this place off the ground, thanks to the Langkloof community, 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨 , Sustainable Ceder and everyone who donated, helped, carried, fixed, built and backed the project.

And this is what makes it special.

Stay here, and you’re not just exploring a different side of the Cederberg, you’re supporting the people who live here.

Local guides will be able to take you out to some incredible rock art and a seriously good rim pool. And coming soon, the community will also be serving up roosterbrood and home-cooked meals around the fire. 🔥

We’ve seen first-hand what this place can become, and we can’t wait for more people to experience it.

Walking changes everything.

In a safari vehicle, you’re an observer. On a walking safari, you’re part of the landscape.

For four unforgettable nights we explored Makalali Game Reserve on a guided walking safari with Wildside Trails. There was no lodge to return to each evening, just our boots, our packs, our camp and the rhythm of the African bush.

Every morning began with fresh tracks in the sand and the question, Who passed through here while we slept? Walking in Big Five country demands a different kind of awareness. You slow down. You notice the alarm calls, the changing wind, the scent of the bush, and the countless signs an experienced guide reads with ease.

Each evening we wild camped beside the river, sharing stories around the fire beneath an endless canopy of stars. The meals somehow tasted even better after a full day on foot, and every night ended with the soundtrack of wild Africa.

Our lead guide was exceptional. Calm, intuitive and completely at home in the bush. Huge thanks as well to Storm and MK, whose support, knowledge and humour made the experience even more memorable.

This wasn’t just another safari.

It was a chance to reconnect with nature and experience the African wilderness at walking pace.

You’ll notice I haven’t posted any photos of the animals. That’s a story for you to discover when you join a walking safari. Some moments are too special to spoil.

A huge thank you to the entire Wildside Trails team for an unforgettable adventure. I’ll be thinking about those riverside camps, the crackling campfires and the privilege of sharing space with wild animals for a long time to come.

There is something deeply satisfying about stepping into the unknown.

Not because you know what’s ahead, but because you don’t.

Skerpioensberg had been sitting in the back of my mind for a long time. More specifically, the elusive Scorpion Cracks route.

There was almost nothing written about it. No recent accounts. No trail to follow. Just a maze of sandstone cliffs and the certainty that there had to be a way through.

Our journey began at the beautiful campsite in the remote village of Kleinvlei, a perfect base for exploring this quieter side of the Cederberg. (If you’re looking to stay there, send me a message and I’ll happily share their contact details.)

We hiked into a remote camp tucked away in the reserve, ready to explore one of the least-travelled corners of the Cederberg.

The mountains had other plans. Rain drifted through camp. Wind howled across the ridges. Temperatures dropped, and for a while it seemed the mountain would keep its secrets.

Then, on Saturday morning, everything aligned.

For the next 12km and 700m of ascent and descent, there was no path to trust. Only instinct and the quiet confidence that somewhere ahead the mountain would reveal a passage.

We squeezed through narrow cracks, scrambled over giant sandstone boulders, crossed icy streams, wandered beneath ancient Ceders, and threaded our way between towering cliff walls.

Every ridge concealed another puzzle. Every boulder field demanded another decision. More than once we stopped, looked back, and wondered how we’d made it through at all.
Then, almost unexpectedly, the mountain relented.

After hours of route-finding through truly wild country, we stepped onto the summit of Skerpioensberg.

These are the days that stay with you. Not because the mountain was the highest or the hardest, but because it reminded us that adventure still exists.

Some hikes are measured in kilometres. Others are measured in moments.

For Group 59, this year’s Fish River Canyon hike was all about the moments.

Five days of following the river through one of Africa’s greatest landscapes. Swimming every day to escape the canyon heat. Watching wild horses appear around a bend in the river.

Listening to black-backed jackals after dark. Spotting a leopard patrolling the far bank while we sat quietly in camp.

Each day ended at another spectacular riverside campsite, expertly selected by lead guide , where the only agenda was a swim, a meal, and a front-row seat to the canyon’s ever-changing colours.

By the time we reached the Pink Palace, tired legs were quickly forgotten as cold beers appeared and burgers landed on the table.

Fish River Canyon has a way of surprising even those who have walked it before. Beyond the towering cliffs and endless river bends lies a place full of wildlife, camaraderie, adventure and stories waiting to be told.

The Fish River Canyon is so much more than just a river and a canyon.
