South Africa has officially made online traveller declarations mandatory for everyone entering or leaving the country from 1 July 2026.

The declaration must be completed within 24 hours before travel through the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS), replacing the country's paper-based customs declaration process.

The new system applies to South African citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals travelling by air, land, sea, or rail, with limited exemptions for transit-only passengers.

The move forms part of South Africa's broader efforts to modernise border management and streamline customs procedures for international travellers.
