Our journey through the Morukuru Family Madikwe continues — and we’re staying on the spectacular coastline of De Hoop Nature Reserve.

While Morukuru Ocean House offers the privacy of an exclusive-use home, Morukuru Beach Lodge provides a different way to experience this remarkable destination. The five-suite lodge can be booked per suite, making it ideal for couples, honeymooners and smaller families looking for an intimate coastal escape.

Surrounded by pristine white dunes, indigenous fynbos and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, the lodge features two Ocean View Suites, two Ocean View Family Suites and a secluded Honeymoon Suite with its own private deck and outdoor bathtub.

From the bush to the coast — our journey through the Morukuru Family Madikwe continues.

Visiting South Africa? A few things worth knowing before you go. 🇿🇦

South Africa is an incredible country to explore, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. Here are a few things we think every visitor should know:

Kilometres, not miles.
Distances and speed limits are measured in kilometres. And yes, South Africa is BIG — places that look close on a map may still be several hours apart.

Remember to tip.
Tipping around 10–15% at restaurants is customary when service isn’t already included. It’s also common to tip guides, drivers and other hospitality staff.

VAT is already included.
Unlike some countries, the price you see in shops and restaurants generally already includes VAT — so there shouldn’t be a surprise at the till.

Baboons are not monkeys — and they're clever!
Never feed baboons or approach them. Keep food out of sight and, in areas where baboons are present, keep your car windows and doors closed. Give them plenty of space.

Never underestimate the mountains.
A beautiful summer's day can change remarkably quickly, particularly around Cape Town. If you're heading onto the mountain, take warm clothing, water and proper footwear, and check conditions beforehand. A mountain hike is not simply a walk in the park.

Respect the ocean.
South Africa's coastline is spectacular, but some beaches experience powerful currents and rips. Swim at designated beaches, preferably where lifeguards are present, and always pay attention to flags and warning signs.

The African sun is stronger than you think.
Sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water are essentials — even on cooler or cloudy days.

We drive on the left.
Something worth remembering before you collect that rental car!

Bring the right adapter.
South Africa uses its own plug types, and not every international travel adapter includes them. Check yours before you leave home.

Ask about the tap water.
Tap water is generally safe in many major South African cities, but conditions can vary by destination. When in doubt, ask your hotel, lodge or guide.

And perhaps most importantly: don't try to see everything in one trip. South Africa is diverse, vast and full of experiences worth slowing down for.
