What a brilliant way to start the new year, with the traditional “Kaapse Klopse”, or Minstrel Carnival in English - a joyful riot of colour, drum beats and blaring trumpets that proceeds through the inner-city streets of Cape Town, and attracting a crowd of 80,000 happy people dancing and celebrating in the streets.

With roots that stretch back hundreds of years to an era when slavery was rive in South Africa, this New Year celebration was a rare opportunity granted to slaves to express themselves with song and dance, and to join in the revelry usually only reserved for the masters.

At The Travel Cafe we just love this unique cultural festival, which brings with it a multi-coloured mix of people, believes and traditions to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
