Places Worth the Detour

A wine farm that feels different.

There are plenty of beautiful wine farms around Cape Town.

But every now and then, there's one that stays with you.

Delaire Graff is one of those places.

We had the chance to spend some time there, and what struck us wasn't just the setting — although that is pretty hard to ignore. 😉

It's the combination of the views, the gardens, the art, the wine and the feeling that you've stepped somewhere that has been thoughtfully created.

It's a place we'd recommend when someone tells us they don't simply want to “do the Winelands” — they want to experience them.

And that's something we think about a lot when planning holidays.

You can visit several wine farms in a day.

Or you can choose one that deserves a little more time.

Sometimes, one really good experience is worth more than ticking three places off a list.

Is winter a good time to visit Cape Town?

Honestly? Yes. But it depends on what you want from your holiday.

Cape Town winters can surprise people.

You can have a rainy, cosy day, and then wake up the next morning to clear blue skies, crisp air and some of the most beautiful views you'll see all year.

The landscape is greener, the Winelands feel wonderfully cosy, and there are fewer visitors around. It's also a lovely time for long lunches, exploring the city, and enjoying Cape Town at a slightly slower pace.

But we wouldn't promise sunshine every day. That's not how Cape Town works. 😉

When we're planning a winter trip, we simply build a little flexibility into the itinerary.

If the weather isn't playing along for a Penguin Beach visit or Peninsula tour, there's always somewhere else worth discovering.

And that's one of the things we love about Cape Town.

You don't have to have perfect weather to have a wonderful holiday. You just need a good plan.

So, would we recommend Cape Town in winter?

Absolutely.

Especially if you enjoy experiencing a destination without the summer crowds and don't mind letting the weather have a little say in your plans.

Confidence isn't speaking first.

Sometimes confidence is being comfortable enough to listen.

To let someone else finish their thought.

To sit with a question before answering.

To say, "I need to think about that."

We often associate confidence with having something to say.

But some of the most confident leaders I've worked with weren't the first voices in the room.

They were the people who didn't need to fill every silence.

They listened.

They considered.

And when they spoke, they had something worth saying.

If we're planning a Cape Town day for someone, Chapman's Peak Drive is one of those routes we don't like to rush.

And honestly, there's not much point in rushing it.

You turn a corner and there's another view.

The ocean changes with the light.

You'll see people pulled over simply because they've spotted somewhere they want to stop for a photograph.

And that's part of the experience.

Yes, you can drive from one end to the other and say you've "done" Chapman's Peak.

But we'd rather build enough time into the day to actually enjoy it.

Stop for the view.

Take the photograph.

Have a coffee.

Look out over the water for a few minutes.

Some of the best travel experiences aren't the ones where you arrive somewhere and tick it off your list.

They're the ones where the journey becomes part of the day.

"Where should we stay in Cape Town?"

It's one of the questions we're asked most often.

And my answer is always the same...
It depends on the kind of holiday you want to have.

If your idea of the perfect holiday is waking up to the sound of the ocean, walking to restaurants, and ending the day with a spectacular sunset, then Camps Bay or Clifton could be exactly what you're looking for.

If slowing down, enjoying mountain views, award-winning food, and exploring wine estates is more your style, I'd suggest looking at Franschhoek or Stellenbosch.

If you'd like to be close to many of Cape Town's biggest attractions, with plenty of restaurants, shopping, and the harbour right on your doorstep, the V&A Waterfront is always a popular choice.

And if you'd rather escape the crowds, Noordhoek or Constantia offer a quieter side of Cape Town, with beautiful scenery, excellent restaurants, and a more relaxed pace.

The truth is, there isn't one best place to stay.

There's only the place that's best for you.
That's why we always start by getting to know the kind of holiday you have in mind before recommending where to stay.

Because the right location doesn't just change where you sleep...

It changes the entire experience.

We've learnt not to rush anyone along Chapman's Peak Drive.

No matter how carefully we plan the day, people always want to stop.

For photos.
To watch the waves.
Or simply because the view catches them by surprise.

It's one of those places where the journey becomes part of the holiday.

Whenever we're building a Cape Town itinerary, we try to include it if time and weather allows. Not because it's another attraction to tick off, but because it's one of those moments people still talk about long after they've gone home.

Sometimes the best part of travelling isn't arriving somewhere.
It's the road that gets you there.
