There are few moments in nature as extraordinary as watching a newborn wildebeest take its first uncertain steps. Within minutes of being born, a wildebeest calf can stand and begin walking- an incredible instinct that is essential for survival. Within a matter of days, the youngster is capable of keeping up with the herd.

And this is what makes the Serengeti calving season so extraordinary. From January to March, the great herds gather across the southern Serengeti to give birth. February is generally the peak, with enormous numbers of calves arriving across the plains. This incredible scene was captured near Lemala Nanyukie Lodge, beautifully positioned in the heart of Tanzania’s Serengeti.While patrolling their territory, the Lion Brothers detected the scent of a female in heat. They exhibited the fascinating Flehmen behavior, which is commonly performed by most males. This unique response allows them to transfer scent molecules from the air to the Jacobson organ, located on the roof of the mouth. The Jacobson organ plays a key role in detecting pheromones and other volatile chemicals that can't be sensed by the normal olfactory system.
