Guide Mike has spent nineteen years at African Bush Camps. We asked him to reflect on his journey, and these are his words:
 
“My first day at African Bush Camps felt so warm and welcoming. Somalisa Camp was small and I knew almost everyone who was there.
 
My most memorable experience from the bush was when a mother elephant dropped her newborn in the mud at a waterhole during delivery. She came to my vehicle to ask for help, and I was able to help retrieve the calf. I will never forget that day.
 
I am very proud of my own success story, rising from a learner guide to a professional guide and becoming a senior guide at African Bush Camps. I now have senior and professional guides who I’ve helped bring through the ranks.
 
Guiding is always about passion and dedication. It is a profession that requires discipline and the desire to always keep learning.” - Guide Mike

“The Linyanti is one of the richest areas in Botswana. We share a boundary with Chobe National Park on one side and Namibia on the other.
 
Because we share that boundary, our wildlife diversity is incredible. We have large herds of elephants, buffalo, zebra, and giraffe, plus a strong leopard population. There are also wild dogs denning in the area. Good numbers of hyenas. And lions that use the Linyanti as a retreat. Every six months to a year, you expect to see new males moving in and that is something I have noticed working here for years.
 
As a guide, Linyanti teaches you not to chase the game. You learn to read the area, understand the season, and let the bush do the work.” - Guide Mighty

“We had been tracking this pack for two days and that afternoon we finally found the den.
 
The adults were out on the hunt and at first all we could see were two that stayed behind. Suddenly, the puppies started coming out. One, then another. We counted nine, maybe ten.
 
When the hunting party returned, they came back to the den and regurgitated food to share with the puppies and the babysitter. That is the only way they can carry food from the kill to the den.
 
Wild dog numbers are declining from poisoning, disease, and predation when the pups are young and vulnerable. Botswana has one of the highest remaining populations, at least 2,000 left. That is why they are so highly protected here. That is why people come to Botswana.

Meet Guide Mighty.
 
“Nineteen years ago, I joined African Bush Camps as a waiter. Today, I am a guide.
 
Growing up near the Okavango Delta, I watched my uncle share his knowledge of the bush with guests and knew, one day, I wanted to do the same.
 
But that journey was not a straight line. I started as a waiter, moved into the kitchen as a chef, got my driver’s license, and in 2014 took the leap into guiding. By 2016, I had my guiding license. Each camp and each guest has taught me something I could not have learned anywhere else.
 
What I love most about guiding is the ability to interpret, anticipate, and share the wild. To help a guest see and feel Africa in a way they never forget. And when they come back year after year, I know we have done something right.
 
African Bush Camps did not just give me a career. They also gave me a purpose.”

For the first time in more than thirty years, black rhino are back in Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe.
 
They arrive not as newcomers, but as descendants; the same bloodline moved out a generation ago to keep them safe, now returned through years of partnership between ZimParks, African Parks, and local communities.
 
It’s one of the great rewilding stories of our time, and it’s happening right on Bumi Hills Safari Lodge’s doorstep.
