Along the scenic coastline of Hermanus—South Africa’s whale-watching capital—lives a tradition as unique as the town itself. Meet the Whale Crier, the only one of his kind in the world!
With a handcrafted kelp horn in hand, he walks the cliffs, blowing a distinctive call to alert visitors when Southern Right whales appear in Walker Bay. More than just a local legend, the Whale Crier is a symbol of Hermanus’s deep connection to marine life and its commitment to eco-tourism and conservation.

Pieter Claasen (1992–98) first took the role, followed by Wilson Salakuzana, and later Pasika Noboba. Since 2011, Eric Davalah has held the title, and engaging visitors directly with whale information .
