Cheetah's explosive acceleration, high speed and manoeuvrability demand better traction than a padded foot alone can provide, and so its claws are permanently extended. Blunted by contact with the ground, they are no longer used to grapple the prey, that function is now performed exclusively by the dew claws (25 mm hook just below the ankle joint on each foreleg) .
At a very fast speed a Cheetah breaks stride and slaps forward and sideways with one or both forelegs, hooks a dew claw into the prey's rump or flank and jerks backwards to spin the prey off balance into a tumble
