World-class experiences, unforgettable moments
The name conjures up images as few other towns or cities can. History is reflected in the neo-Dutch, and modern-Victorian architecture that encompasses simple lines, fine detail and elegant proportions that bear witness to a proud and dignified heritage. Oak-lined streets, where jagged lines of trees are etched against white walls q

uenching the heat of summer, transform the streets into soft, shady tunnels flanked by art galleries, museums, restaurants and bistro cafés. The town’s academic history has its roots in the early nineteenth century when the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, the forerunner of today’s internationally renowned centre for education, the University of Stellenbosch, was established. Stellenbosch accommodates ‘clean’ industry and is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of whom have their head office in the Town of Oaks. There is a small-town atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature’s bounty, yet Stellenbosch is no more than half an hour’s drive to the cosmopolitan buzz of Cape Town and endless pristine beaches. The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for wine-growing and the region is internationally-renowned for award-winning wines. The first Wine Route was established in 1971 and comprised 17 cellars; today the Stellenbosch American Express ® Wine Routes boasts more than 200 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in many cellars located in the rolling winelands. The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for young and old, the adventurer, nature-lover, music and art-lover, and history buff. The unsurpassed scenery with views over vineyards, mountains and orchards, offers excellent photographic opportunities. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and savour the atmosphere; mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of the many restaurants. Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries. At the end of your day, relax at one of the many health resorts and spas located in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against the foothills of majestic mountains. In an atmosphere where art, music, theatre, outdoor living and adventure reigns, what more could anyone want?

Visit Stellenbosch, in partnership with Dwarsrivier Valley Tourism, recently represented Stellenbosch and Greater Stellenbosch at the Spotlight Travel Expo in Gaborone, Botswana.

The expo provided an excellent platform to connect with travel trade partners, tour operators, travel agents, and industry stakeholders, while showcasing the diverse experiences that make our destination so special, from world-class wine and cuisine to culture, adventure, nature, and authentic local experiences.

"The exhibition provided a valuable platform to strengthen destination awareness and engage directly with the travel trade," says Jenivè Davidse, Visitor Service Manager at Visit Stellenbosch.

Lavinia Goshai of Dwarsrivier Valley Tourism adds: "The opportunity highlighted the unique products and experiences available within the Dwarsrivier Valley and reinforced its place as an integral part of Greater Stellenbosch."

Together, we continue to build meaningful partnerships, strengthen regional tourism connections, and create new opportunities for visitor growth across Stellenbosch and Greater Stellenbosch.

Winter is tough, you can help 🐾

This winter, Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch is asking for more than donations. They’re asking for compassion. Whether you donate a blanket, dog food, cat food, pet treats or toys, volunteer your time, or open your home as a foster family, you can make a real difference in the life of an animal in need.

Rescue animals are not damaged. They are simply waiting for a second chance, a warm bed, a kind touch and someone to believe in them.

⚠️ This is the final week to donate. Please don’t wait. Every blanket, bag of food and toy can help an animal stay warm, fed and cared for this winter.
📍 Drop-off point: Visitor Information Centre, 47 Church Street
🗓️ Throughout June
Please don’t scroll past. Donate, volunteer, foster or share this post. Together, we can give these animals the love, comfort and care they deserve. ❤️

Can changing an artwork’s location change its meaning?
In public art, the answer is almost always yes.

A sculpture is never experienced in isolation. The moment it moves out of a gallery and into the street, it starts a new conversation with everything around it.

In Dreamscapes: Form and space through curious eyes, placement is part of the work. A sculpture on a rooftop asks to be read differently from one standing in a public square, near a church, beside a business, or under a tree.

In this video, artist Strijdom van der Merwe reflects on how public space can reshape the way we see and understand sculpture. Through his works exhibited with SOST over the years, we see how an artwork does not simply move from one place to another; its story changes with it.

📍 Dreamscapes runs until 30 January 2027.

How long should public art last?

Public art is not only valuable when it lasts forever. Some works become landmarks. Others become moments. Both matter.

In Dreamscapes: Form and space through curious eyes, both have a place.

From long-standing SOST works that have become part of Stellenbosch’s public landscape and are being revisited through Dreamscapes, to temporary works that create powerful memories while they are here, this conversation asks us to rethink what makes public art meaningful.

Is it how long it stays?
Or what it changes while it is here?

🥾🌄 Walking for Justice, Inclusion and Hope

On 16 June, as South Africa commemorated 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, students, communities, leaders and changemakers came together for the Annual Social Justice Walk.

The 16km journey from Stellenbosch, via the Old Helshoogte Pass to Pniël, was more than a walk; it was a powerful expression of solidarity and a shared commitment to access, education parity and inclusion.

The day was enriched by inspiring messages from Prof Thuli Madonsela, Mayor Jeremy Fasser, SRC Chair Putlane Mtshali, Annemie Liebenberg , and others who shared stories, reminding us of the power of education, inclusion and social justice. 💛

Through , funds raised will help students overcome financial barriers, clear student debt and continue their academic journeys with dignity and hope.

Thank you to everyone who walked, supported and stood together in the pursuit of a more just and inclusive society.
