World-class experiences, unforgettable moments
The name conjures up images as few other towns or cities can. History is reflected in the neo-Dutch, and modern-Victorian architecture that encompasses simple lines, fine detail and elegant proportions that bear witness to a proud and dignified heritage. Oak-lined streets, where jagged lines of trees are etched against white walls q

uenching the heat of summer, transform the streets into soft, shady tunnels flanked by art galleries, museums, restaurants and bistro cafés. The town’s academic history has its roots in the early nineteenth century when the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, the forerunner of today’s internationally renowned centre for education, the University of Stellenbosch, was established. Stellenbosch accommodates ‘clean’ industry and is a sought-after location for business, ranging from entrepreneurs to major international companies, many of whom have their head office in the Town of Oaks. There is a small-town atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle surrounded by nature’s bounty, yet Stellenbosch is no more than half an hour’s drive to the cosmopolitan buzz of Cape Town and endless pristine beaches. The mild weather and unique terroir is ideal for wine-growing and the region is internationally-renowned for award-winning wines. The first Wine Route was established in 1971 and comprised 17 cellars; today the Stellenbosch American Express ® Wine Routes boasts more than 200 members. Brandy, one of South Africa’s finest products, is distilled in many cellars located in the rolling winelands. The tranquil, friendly town offers a plethora of activities and events for young and old, the adventurer, nature-lover, music and art-lover, and history buff. The unsurpassed scenery with views over vineyards, mountains and orchards, offers excellent photographic opportunities. Stroll along the streets and secluded lanes and savour the atmosphere; mingle with the locals at an open-air coffee shop or bistro, or titillate your taste buds with fine local fare or international cuisine at one of the many restaurants. Hike through vineyards and along mountain trails that have been the source of inspiration to poets and artists for centuries. At the end of your day, relax at one of the many health resorts and spas located in the town, amid rolling vineyards, or set snugly against the foothills of majestic mountains. In an atmosphere where art, music, theatre, outdoor living and adventure reigns, what more could anyone want?

PART 3: Wings, wheels, and art made for the everyday.

With Dreamscapes: Form and space through curious eyes, public art becomes something you don’t only look at from a distance. It becomes something you can question, walk around, laugh with, wonder about, and sometimes even use.

In Part 3 of our Dreamscapes video series, we continue the route with a winged fire horse in the middle of town by Jess Bothma, a life-size wire car made by Philipstown Draadkar Grand prix and Town Festival in the Karoo, and a closer look at the artworks that turn something as ordinary as a bike stand into something imaginative.

This is where Dreamscapes reminds us that art does not only belong to galleries, specialists or “serious” spaces. It can be made by young hands. It can be shaped from wire. It can stand on a street corner. It can hold your bicycle. It can make you stop and think: wait, is this art, play, design, craft, or all of it at once?

Watch Part 1-3 of our 4-part series, then follow along as we continue exploring the Dreamscapes route through Stellenbosch.

Dreamscapes runs until 30 January 2027. LINK IN BIO to learn more.
