GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

15 August 2025

Classic winter fishing in the Gold Coast broadwater this week with lots of flathead, squid, bream, tarwhine, flounder, and sand whiting increasing in numbers.

The squid are getting bigger with some very nice ones amongst them, the best area has been the main channel from Seaworld to Sundale bridge. Currigee, Runaway Bay, and Bayview channels are always worth a try too. Now the water has cleaned right up we have been catching squid on all tides. 9am to 3pm is the best time when the sun is up higher. Average water temperature is sitting on around 18 degrees.

The flatties haven’t been consistent but when there’s baitfish around Crab island, North Currigee, and Curlew island the flathead are there hunting and feeding hard on run in and run out tides. The deeper channels next to the islands are worth a go with blades and vibes and they catch everything. There are heaps of bream in these areas and the reefy areas North of the seaway and in the deep hole just South of Crab island. Tailor have been turning up at times too chasing bait, keep an eye out for birds diving and tailor busting up, they make a big splash.

This coming week I have charters every day. When the winds not too bad I’ll definitely fish all over the broadwater for a big mix, while on windy days I’ll chase big whiting in the river.

Nearly fully booked in the next few weeks. Next available charter dates are 28 August, 2, 8, 10 September.

GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint

10 August 2025

A windy week and some tough fishing but there were still squid, flathead, and whiting on the bite.

This coming week there is still some Southerly wind around but not quite as strong. The tides are looking good with the mornings featuring run ins and decent amount of flow. I’ll be chasing big sand whiting and flathead mainly on beach worms, hard body lures, and soft plastics in the Southern end of the broadwater.

The water is nice and clean now so natural colour lures work best. Blade lures such as Ecogear ZX and Samaki Bladelicious work great from shallow to deep, and S Tackle soft plastics including the fish tail 2.5 inch and 4 inch, and the rattle minnow will catch heaps of fish.

Gold Coast calm water fishing charters

Brad Smith is a local fishing guide, known by most as "Smithy". He has been working as a full time professional fishing guide in Northern NSW and on the Gold Coast rivers and estuaries for over 25 years. He GUARANTEES if you don't catch fish...your day is free!

Your professional fishing guides Brad and Clint fish the Gold Coast and Tweed region and will provide a great day's fishing you won't forget. Our charters cater for anglers of all ages and experience, and we specialise in private charters for small groups.

Our trips are all on calm water so no seasickness to worry about. Main Target species are Flathead, Whiting, Bream, Tailor, Trevally, Mulloway and Mangrove Jack. We lure and bait fish the beautiful, calm waters of the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales region.

We are located within an hours drive of Brisbane. We love nothing more than educating experienced anglers or families with kids, catching whiting, flathead or bream with fresh bait, or trolling and casting lures for a variety of species. We don't just catch fish, we teach you the secrets of how, where and when.
