GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint
1 June 2026
The Gold Coast estuary fishing has absolutely fired up over the past week and the next few months are shaping up to be some of the best fishing of the year.
The Nerang River has been producing massive numbers of quality fish. Big bream have been everywhere, along with plenty of grunter and some excellent sand whiting.
The water remains heavily stained from the recent rain, but the fish certainly don't seem to mind. We even caught Australian bass and freshwater eels at Bundall during the week, which just shows how far the fresh water influence has pushed down the system. Catch rates have been outstanding, with most trips producing between 30 and 80 fish per session, and importantly, a high percentage of those fish have been legal size. It's the sort of fishing that keeps anglers smiling all day.
The Broadwater is also starting to come alive. Flathead are beginning to fire in the deeper channels, particularly around the dirty water edges. Samaki Vibelicious Forktails, Ecogear ZX vibes and soft plastics have all been accounting for some quality fish. The water is gradually clearing on the run in tides and every week should see the flathead fishing improve further.
Tailor are also on the move, chasing schools of baitfish around the Seaway and surrounding channels. With water temperatures now sitting around 20 degrees, we're entering the prime season for many of our favourite winter species.
Looking ahead, the next three months are widely regarded as the best time of year on the Gold Coast for flathead, squid, flounder, tailor, tuskfish, winter whiting, big bream, and many more species on lures. Big sand whiting are available year round locally, and with cooler water continuing to arrive, the fishing should only get better and better in the coming weeks.
June is already shaping up to be a busy month for charters and available dates are starting to fill quickly. Book early to avoid disappointment.
If you'd like to experience some of the Gold Coast's most productive estuary fishing with all tackle supplied, expert local knowledge and plenty of action, now is the perfect time to get out on the water with me. Heaps of light tackle fun, lots of laughs, and catch a fresh feed!
