β‘ Did you know Longreach has been powering itself since 1921 - with a unique gas production system that was a first for Australia?
While the rest of the country was figuring out electricity, our local Shire Council took matters into their own hands. Ten massive engines, a groundbreaking gas system, and pure Outback determination kept the lights on for over 60 years until the state grid finally caught up in 1985!
There's more than power at Longreach Powerhouse & Historical Museum - explore the 1921 swimming baths (originally filled from a bore sunk in 1897!), wander through Nogo Cottage showing family life from the 1940s, and discover the agricultural machinery that built central west Queensland.
It's the perfect family day out with scavenger hunts for the kids and stories that'll have you amazed at what this little town achieved π§
