Meet “The Wave”, Halifax’s Iconic Waterfront Sculpture
If you’ve ever strolled the Halifax waterfront, chances are you’ve seen, or climbed, The Wave. Commissioned by the Halifax Waterfront Development Corporation and created in 1988 by local artist Donna Hiebert, this 3.6-metre ferroconcrete sculpture has become one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
Inspired by the natural motion of the harbour and coated in the same sandy mortar used on the Sydney Opera House, its grey-blue surface invites passers-by to touch, explore, and connect with art in a truly maritime way.
Kids (and kids at heart) still run up its curving back to take in the harbour view before snapping that perfect waterfront selfie.
Don’t forget to take your own photo with The Wave on your way to come visit our Halifax Harbour Tours kiosk just behind it! While you’re there, book a relaxing cruise aboard Halifax’s only all-electric boat and see the harbour that inspired this iconic piece of art from a whole new perspective.
