Québec culture in a nutshell : Marriage in Quebec: A Different Kind of Commitment
Quebec has its own way of doing things and that includes love and marriage. According to the latest stats from the Institut de la Statistique du Québec, only 23,000 couples tied the knot in 2024, with brides averaging 32 and grooms 33 years old.
Here’s what’s interesting:
• 43% of Quebec couples live together unmarried—compared to just 10% in Ontario.
• Quebec leads Canada in cohabitation but is slower when it comes to formal marriage.
Legal protections for all families: In June 2025, Quebec introduced the union parentale law, giving unmarried parents the same rights as married couples—including property and family home protections.
A progressive history: Quebec was also ahead of its time on marriage equality, legalizing same-sex marriage in 2004—before the rest of Canada.
What this tells us: Quebecois aren’t against marriage—they just take their time and focus on protecting all kinds of families, married or not. Love here is meaningful, not mandatory.
So, if you’re visiting Quebec, take a cue: commitment comes in many forms—and it’s celebrated in more ways than one!
