A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Northside Design Ride, and to each of our speakers who were so generous in opening their spaces and sharing their stories with us all.

On Saturday 23 May, we had twenty-five curious participants — on vintage bikes, electric bikes, Bromptons, mountain bikes, and road bikes — join us on a leisurely cycling tour of Melbourne’s most creative neighbourhoods. From Collingwood to Abbotsford, to Clifton Hill and Fitzroy.

The ride was an invitation to embrace the art of taking it slow, on two wheels. To see the city through a different lens, and to discover some of the designers, artists, and makers whose passion and presence make our neighbourhoods truly special.

Special thanks to Oli, Daniel, Shena and Karan, Betty, Shari, Ian and Nick, Josh and Susie, Ryan, Zachary and Tilly, and Isabella and the WALKENS team.

If you missed out on tickets, or want to learn more, we’re working on a digital version of the tour with recordings from each speaker — coming very soon.

Photos by our fabulous participants, all captured on film.

We dreamt up Tour de Sign as a way to celebrate some of Melbourne’s iconic design work — across wayfinding, signage, placemaking, and branding — and to foster conversations and curiosity amongst our design community and broader public.

We selected seven projects that we admire, and invited the studios and creatives behind the work to take part in our somewhat unconventional event.

On Saturday 16 May, we had twelve designers, forty curious participants, one extremely cute baby, and two furry companions join us on a leisurely walking tour through Melbourne’s CBD.

Tour de Sign far exceeded what we could have ever hoped for, and we are still smiling.

If you missed out on tickets, or want to learn more, we’re working on a digital version of the tour with recordings from each speaker — coming very soon.

Northside Design Ride is an invitation to embrace the art of taking it slow, on two wheels, and to see the city through a different lens. We’re partnering with WALKENS House of Film, who have become a home for those seeking an analogue lifestyle in our digital world. Their expert Film Lab team will be processing our films and the moments captured from our ride.

WALKENS House of Film is an independent film photography store and film lab, dedicated to making shooting film easy for all. Supplying film and camera essentials to Aussies and abroad for over ten years, WALKENS was born in a time when film was expensive, hard to find, and came with no customer service. WALKENS’ goal has always been to create a welcoming, inclusive space packed with all sorts of photography fun and related gear. This philosophy informed the fit-out of their Fitzroy store (designed by the WALKENS team themselves), featuring a distinct mid-century aesthetic with warm lighting, rich materials, iconic 35mm film display wall, and good old-fashioned friendly service!

Zachary Frankel’s multidisciplinary practice encompasses furniture, lighting, sculpture, and objects. His work often draws inspiration from historical styles, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. Whether crafting by hand or employing modern technology, Frankel believes in the value of all tools and techniques, seeing each as an opportunity to push the boundaries of design. This philosophy results in pieces that blur the lines between functional design and sculptural art, offering a unique perspective in the design landscape.

Monde Studio, founded by Tilly Barber, produces universal modular seating that is made in Australia and designed to be used, not preserved.Modelled on the contours of the human form, the sweeping curves of The Monde Seating System commands comfort in a relaxed, reclined position. They are sculpted from Green Tag certified foam, paying equal ode to ergonomics and the environment. With no internal mechanisms or complex parts, Monde’s philosophy resists cyclical trends and planned obsolescence in furniture manufacturing, producing products designed to be passed from one generation to the next.

Our Kyneton guide has been updated!

We've expanded the guide to include 34 stops and sidewalks, plus added the latest information following our recent visit. We were there on a Thursday and were pleasantly surprised by Harvest festival, with the retailers on Piper Street staying open late with drinks and snacks, live music stages, market stalls, pork pies, and warm spiced cider by a large bonfire.

The updated Kyneton Guide is available now through our website – the link is in our bio.

Campaspe Mill Distillery is housed within a beautiful bluestone mill built during the gold rush era on the banks of the Campaspe River. We visited recently and loved exploring this gin distillery and bistro surrounded by a landscaped European-style garden.

We tried their ruby gin with its delicious citrus flavours and the dry gin with rosemary and herbaceous notes. We sat outside in the autumn sun, overlooking the garden and sculptures by local artists. And couldn't resist a serve of the freshly baked sticky date pudding!

They craft their gin range on site – try a gin flight, house-made cocktails, or classic G&Ts. The food menu offers sharing plates with local cheese and charcuterie, light meals like toasties and soup, plus lasagne and tart du jour. Be sure to wander through the small museum or peek at the working distillery. For something special, book the VIP tasting experience in the upstairs speakeasy with its full-size billiards table and vintage artwork.

Campaspe Mill Distillery is one of the stops from our (recently updated) Kyneton guide. To learn more, or to purchase the guide, click the link in our bio.
