"The JRA scheme really did change my life trajectory." 💫

Meet Natalia, who is the first in her family to go to University and said that before starting university that postgraduate education was never on her horizon!

Natalia decided to sign up for the JRA scheme to further research classroom behaviour-tracking apps used in secondary schools in England and how they are experienced by parents of students with Special Educational Needs.

The JRA scheme is an eight-week JRA scheme that runs each summer, that gives students the chance to be active contributors to cutting-edge research projects, either by joining existing initiatives or proposing their own. Every JRA is mentored by an academic supervisor and a PhD researcher and receive a bursary. The scheme is supported by generous donations to the Sussex Fund and the Kroto-Walton Fund.

A big congratulations to recent graduate Rhiannon Williams who has been shortlisted for the 'Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker of the Year' award!

Rhiannon is currently employed as a social worker for Brighton & Hove City Council and said regarding the news: “I’m especially thankful to my university and the lecturers who supported me. I was pregnant in my first year of university and didn’t know if I would have the ability to complete the course while raising a child. Their belief in me - even when things were tough - made such a difference."

Wishing you all the best for the awards ceremony in October, Rhiannon!

"There is something for everyone, and it’s a great way for students to experience escapism and joy."

Student Hannah discusses her experience taking part in the the Sussex Musical Theatre Society (SMuTS), where she was recently given the opportunity to direct one of their shows, High School Musical: On Stage, in her third year!

Recently, SMuTS were the lucky beneficiaries of a generous gift in an alumnus’ Will. Dr Michael Turner studied Education at Sussex from 1987 to 1992 and had a fondness for amateur dramatics. The gift allowed SMuTS to have greater creative freedom by allowing them to hire a bridge for the stage.

New study finds cats prefer predictability 🐈

Researchers from Sussex looked at whether cats demonstrate level 5 object permanence – the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are moved out of sight in a way that is not directly observed.

In their experiment, a toy was hidden and then revealed in either its original location or an unexpected one. Surprisingly, the study found that cats were more likely to play with the toy if it reappeared in the original location.
