One week to go till Sussex Retold! A conference investigating traditional arts, crafts, cultures and folk music in the Sussex region.🍃

Speakers will include Anooshka Rawden, Cultural Heritage Lead for the South Downs National Park Authority; Alinah Azadeh, artist, writer and local cultural activist; Caroline Lucas, former MP and now Professor of Practice in Environmental Sustainability at the University; Matthew Bird, Director of Love Our Ouse; Libby Drew, Knepp Wildlife Foundation Director and Charlie Cain, National Trust Ranger, Saddlescombe Farm.

A new documentary led by Dr Rachael Durrant, Senior Research Fellow, Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School, explores how women face particular challenges and barriers in getting access to land and building a life in farming in Britain.

The film follows four women who are working hard to make a living from small-scale organic and agroecological farming, despite experiencing financial insecurity, housing insecurity and battles with planning.

Researchers from the University of Sussex and Uppsala University Sweden have found that the powerful vibrations bees use to collect pollen from flowers come at a surprisingly high energy cost!

The recently released study shares the first direct measurement of the energy required for “floral buzzing” - a specialised behaviour used by many bees to shake pollen loose from flowers, including crops such as tomatoes and blueberries. Many of the world’s flowering plants depend on this technique to be pollinated.
