Ty Mawr Wybrnant. A beautiful autumn afternoon at Bishop William Morgan’s birthplace in the secluded Wybrnant valley, hidden away between Dolwyddelan and Penmachno. Beautifully preserved by the National Trust with a scenic short walk around the neighbouring woodland to take in the views, with some entertaining audio clips, (watch out for some slippy slate steps!)

A pivotal figure in Welsh history, Morgan is best known for translating the complete Bible into Welsh, Y Beibl cyssegr-lan, (1588) from Greek and Hebrew. In doing so he helped to standardise written Welsh and also helped preserve the Welsh language through its use in Welsh churches, chapels and religious organisations. An original copy of his Bible went on public view for the first time at Cardiff Cathedral last year.

Field Studies Council gold DofE History residential in Conwy valley with FSC Rhyd-y-Creuau. Absolute privilege to be involved with this week for a special group of young people with a genuine passion for history. Conwy Castle, Plas Mawr, Canovium Roman Fort, Maen y Bardd and Capel Garmon burial chambers, standing stones, stone circles, Iron Age settlements, the rock cannon at Betws y Coed, a WWII crash site. So much packed into a fun filled week. Let’s hope we can do this again. Good for the soul!

Wi******er Cathedral. Resting place of royalty and literary queen, Jane Austen. A wonderful mix of architectural styles from Romanesque/Norman to perpendicular gothic. Built on a waterlogged river valley, it lacks the searing spire of Salisbury, for structural reasons (the original Norman tower collapsed). But this is more than made up for by the wonderful vaulting, medieval choir and restored screen. Well worth the visit on a wet and windy autumn afternoon.

Wonderful Wi******er. So much history in this former Roman city and one-time capital of England. The Great Hall (the only remaining part of a once grand castle) hosts a ‘round table’ once thought to be Arthurian but actually a 13th century tribute. It was later painted over for Henry VIII, complete with Tudor rose and a portrait that looks suspiciously like a young Henry.

The Hall itself was also used as a courtroom for centuries, perhaps most famously for the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh, accused of conspiracy against James I. Right up until 1973, the court was used for a high profile trial of IRA suspects convicted for a bombing campaign in London.

Unfortunately, the cathedral was closed to visitors today to host a graduation ceremony for the university, but still so much to see.

Eyam village. A fascinating morning investigating Eyam, famous for its role in the plague of 1665, isolating itself under the leadership of Rev Mompesson, when the disease came to the village. It is estimated that there were 260 victims (including the rector’s wife) from a population of 350). Also the home to an 8th century Celtic cross, used to convert pagan locals to Christianity. Several war graves can also be found in the church graveyard. An interesting place!

Derbyshire 3 Peaks. 18 1/2 miles & nearly 3000ft of ascent with an intrepid group from MERLYN | Luxury Showering for Maximum Adventure , raising money for the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Awesome effort from the team.

From a history point of view, this walk set off from Bowden Bridge, the same starting point as the 1932 Mass Trespass walk by up to 600 working people from the industrial towns around Manchester and Sheffield, protesting for open access to the hills and moors. It ended in 5 arrests and prison sentences of up to 6 months for the leaders, but in the longer term it public outcry at the harsh penalties helped to pave the way for the National Parks and Access to the CountrysideAct of 1949 which has opened up huge swathes of previously fenced off for grouse shooting and private estates. The walk also provided a chance to see the famous plane crash memorial at Bleaklow.
