Someone recently asked me how I ended up becoming a tour guide in Derry.

I was born & raised in the Bogside and I am deeply passionate about sharing our heritage with visitors.

While I officially launched as a tour operator in the year 2000, prior to that I was the 'wee boy' who was sent out to 'show our visitors round' by friends and family.

I have a deep connection to Derry and the people of this city. I am lucky to spend my days talking to people from all walks of life. We all have a shared interest - learning about the history of this place; the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I am so proud of the progress this great place has made. While some people might continue to argue that it's Derry vs Londonderry, my tours focus on the Peace & Reconciliation that has occurred in this great city.

If you would like a tour that covers all sides of the conflict, which focuses on the history of the city - visit toursofderry.com to learn more.

The Bogside isn’t a place you just visit. It’s a place that stays with you. ✌️

I grew up hearing the stories. Some were whispered in kitchens, others painted bold and unmissable on gable walls. The Bogside is more than a neighbourhood—it’s where history stopped being something in a book and became something people lived, breathed, and still carry with them every single day.

Yesterday, I stood with two visitors from Boston at the Free Derry corner. I pointed to the wall where “You Are Now Entering Free Derry” was first painted in 1969. We talked about what those words meant then—and what they mean now. A local man passing by stopped, nodded at me, and said quietly, “Tell them it’s about dignity. Just tell them that.”

He walked on. We stood in silence for a moment. That’s the Bogside for you—history isn’t a performance here. It’s present tense.

If you truly want to understand Derry, you must walk the Bogside. Not rush past it in a bus. Not snap a quick photo of the murals and leave. You need to stand on Rossville Street, look at the Bloody Sunday monument, and hear about the ordinary people who marched for civil rights and changed the course of a nation. You need to see the People’s Gallery murals—not just as art, but as a living testimony. And you need a guide who can take you beyond dates and facts, to the stories that make your chest tighten.

That’s what my Bogside-focused tours are. No scripts. No political lectures. Just honest, human storytelling from someone who knows these streets like his own heartbeat. We’ll walk the route of the civil rights march, stand where history turned, and I’ll share memories passed down from those who were there. You’ll finish not with a head full of facts, but with a feeling you’ll carry home.

This isn’t a tour for passive listeners. It’s for curious souls who want to connect deeply with a place that shaped modern Ireland.
