Tower of London, one of the most famous historic landmarks in London, England.

The Tower, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, was founded by William the Conqueror in 1066 and has stood for nearly 1,000 years on the north bank of the River Thames. Its central structure, known as the White Tower (seen prominently in the image), was built to serve both as a royal residence and a symbol of Norman power.

Throughout history, the Tower of London has served many roles — a royal palace, fortress, armory, treasury, zoo, and most famously, a prison. It was the site of many important historical events, including imprisonments and executions of notable figures.

Today, the Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. It houses the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom and is guarded by the ceremonial Yeoman Warders (also known as Beefeaters).
