Spotlight on Norway 🇳🇴☀️🏔️️ The land of Midnight Sun, breathtaking natural scenery and a long history of beautifully crafted textiles, from weaving traditions dating back to the Viking Age to intricate folk costumes and world-famous knitwear.

Stitchtopia expert Karin Hellaby (whose first language is Norwegian!) recently led our Norway and Summer Stitching Cruise, checking off highlights such as the ice hotel in Kirkenes, late-night sunset views and – perhaps most special of all – observing Constitution Day celebrations on 17 May.

This brand-new weekend is hosted by award-winning textile artist Janice Gunner, whose love of Japanese textiles shines through in her book Shibori for Textile Artists.

Day 1 of the retreat focuses on Sashiko (“little stabs”), a traditional running-stitch technique practised in Japan for hundreds of years, which is used to reinforce and decorate textiles. On Day 2, the focus turns to Boro (“rags” or "something tattered or repaired") textiles: worn fabrics that have been repeatedly patched and stitched together to extend their lifespan. Both beautiful little reminders of the ability of textile creators to make art out of that which has been damaged 🧡
