A pub company plans a £200,000 plus refurbishment of the British Oak at Calder Grove in Wakefield.

The pub on Denby Dale Road has stood empty since it was closed earlier this year.

Star Pubs is seeing new tenants and say a £215,000 refurbishment is planned to transform the British Oak into a "premium local with a striking internal and external upgrade."

Taste of Africa by Monsur Kitchen is shaking up the local food scene as the latest feature in our series!

Injecting the bold, rich culinary traditions of West Africa directly into the city centre, this independent eatery has become a must-visit spot since launching in 2025. Operating from a central venue with dual entrances at 18 Cross Square and 19 Bull Ring, the team serves up a vibrant menu of authentic Nigerian delicacies built entirely on generational family recipes. Every dish—from the iconic smoky jollof rice and freshly grilled suya to their comforting pepper soup—is prepared from scratch using time-honoured cooking methods and traditional ingredients.

Securing a permanent brick-and-mortar home right in the heart of town marks the team’s biggest milestone to date. They have successfully transformed a city centre premises into a lively cultural hub where people from all walks of life can gather and experience true Nigerian hospitality.

“Our mission goes beyond just serving great food; it’s about bringing people together through shared culinary experiences,” the team highlights. “We love seeing first-time visitors discover West African flavours. Watching someone try egusi soup or jollof rice for the first time, fall in love with it, and return later with their friends and family is incredibly rewarding.”

“The local community has been remarkably supportive from the moment we opened our doors. Having the backing of the diverse local community, alongside guidance from Wakefield Council and Wakefield First, made this the perfect district to plant our roots.”

The journey is only just getting started for the restaurant. The team is currently gearing up to expand their menu, debut a brand-new outdoor seating area, and host immersive cultural food events to cement Wakefield's status as a thriving hub for independent food lovers.

To explore the menu or plan your next meal, head down to their Cross Square or Bull Ring entrances! You can find out more and visit their page here: Monsur Kitchen
