Save the Archeological sites of Taxila from delisting

UNESCO has formally warned Pakistan to reverse modern "reconstructions" at the Mohra Moradu and Sirkap sites in Taxila. Failure to undo these cement interventions and modern masonry could lead to the site being placed on the World Heritage in Danger list, or complete delisting.

The situation escalated in March after a visitor shared photographs with UNESCO in Paris, revealing that ancient walls were being replaced with new construction and altered in height, which critically compromises the site's authenticity and integrity.

The Conflict: UNESCO requires minimum intervention and the use of compatible, original materials. Meanwhile, the Punjab archaeology department has defended their actions, stating the works were necessary conservation to stabilize the ancient structures, leading to a tense standoff.

The Stakes: If delisted, Taxila would join a highly exclusive and infamous group, as UNESCO has only delisted a site three times in its history. It would also critically damage Pakistan's broader campaign to get 24 other historic sites (such as Rani Ghat) globally recognized.

UNESCO warns Pakistan to reverse Taxila site changes or risk delisting

UNESCO's stern warning: The UN cultural agency has told Pakistan to undo recent changes at Taxila’s Mohra Moradu and Sirkap sites or face danger list inclusion or delisting.

Heritage authenticity at risk: Use of cement and uniform modern masonry is said to compromise the sites’ historical integrity, replacing ancient irregular stonework.

The agency cited past precedent in Germany to stress it would act if the work, described as 'unnecessary interventions', is not reversed. The warning followed photographic evidence showing modern, polished masonry replacing ancient irregular stones and walls being raised in height.

The dispute threatens Pakistan’s broader bid to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for 24 additional sites, a process ongoing since 1997. Officials fear the Taxila controversy could undermine credibility with the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, affecting proposals for other culturally significant sites. Taxila itself, inscribed in 1980, is a rare archaeological complex representing Vedic, Buddhist, and Greco-Buddhist heritage, making its preservation a matter of national and regional cultural pride.
