🇬 Humpback whales, sei whales, s***m whales, and, for the first time this season, Atlantic spotted dolphins (🥳) were among the highlights!
Common, bottlenose, and Risso’s dolphins completed a diverse list of our sightings.
We’re entering a transitional phase at sea: while some of the baleen whales are still passing through, the first signs of summer species are already making their presence felt. 💙

🇵 Baleias de bossas, baleias sardinheiras, os nossos habituais cachalotes e, pela primeira vez nesta temporada, golfinhos-pintados (🥳) foram alguns dos grandes destaques.
Golfinhos comuns, roazes e golfinhos de Risso completaram esta lista de avistamentos, que está particularmente diversificada.
Estamos também a entrar numa fase de transição: enquanto algumas das grandes baleias de barbas ainda passam por estas águas, começam já a aparecer os primeiros sinais das espécies típicas do verão. 💙

They’re deep divers, social strategists, and one of the most vocal cetacean species. 🐋

🇵🇹 O nosso encontro com as incríveis baleias piloto.
Sabia que, na verdade, estes animais pertencem à família dos golfinhos oceânicos e vivem em grupos, liderados por matriarcas, que duram toda a vida?

🇬🇧 This past days, we had the incredible opportunity to observe a wide variety of cetaceans in the waters around Faial island - a key hotspot for marine biodiversity in the North Atlantic. From incredibles females s***m whales with their babys and massive males to sei whales, humpback whales, and several dolphin species including Risso’s, bottlenose, striped, and common dolphins.

The highlight of the week: a breathtaking breach by a s***m whale just meters from our boat a rare and powerful behavior, especially from such a large animal. It was a moment that left both our team and our guests absolutely speechless.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this past days both unforgettable. 🐋💙

🇵🇹 Nos últimos dias, tivemos a oportunidade de observar uma grande variedade de cetáceos em redor da nossa ilha do Faial, um ponto importante de biodiversidade marinha no Atlântico Norte. Desde incríveis cachalotes fêmeas com as suas crias, enormes cachalotes machos, baleias sardinheiras, baleias de bossas e diversas espécies de golfinhos, incluindo golfinhos de Risso, golfinhos roazes, golfinhos riscados e golfinhos comuns.

Mas o ponto alto da semana: uma impressionante brecha de um cachalote a poucos metros do nosso barco, um comportamento raro, especialmente para um animal tão grande. Foi um momento que deixou a nossa equipa e todos a bordo absolutamente sem palavras.

Obrigado a todos os que se juntaram a nós e ajudaram a tornar estes últimos dias inesquecíveis. 🐋💙

🇬🇧 What a day at sea! 🌊🐋🐬

Today’s whale watching brought us 6 species of cetaceans and some amazing bonus sightings too!

🌄 Morning trip highlights:

- A pair of blue whales (mum & calf)
- Three sei whales heading west
- A s***m whale resting at the surface before diving — we also watched her fluke rise beautifully as she disappeared in search of squid.
- And small pod of Risso’s dolphins, with babies and even a newborn with its yellowish head!

🌇 Afternoon trip highlights:

- A big, playful group of common dolphins
- A social group of bottlenose dolphins
- And to top it off — more s***m whales, including females and a calf, part of the same group from the morning!

Bonus sightings throughout the day:
🌊🐢 A couple of loggerhead sea turtles
⛵️🇵🇹 Plenty of Portuguese man o’ war
🕊️ Cory’s shearwaters and terns soaring above the waves

Definitely, nature truly put on a show today!

A observação de cetáceos de hoje trouxe-nos 6 espécies diferentes e ainda alguns avistamentos bónus incríveis!

🌄 Destaques da saída da manhã:

- Um par de baleias-azuis (mãe e cria)
- Três baleias-sardinheiras a deslocar-se para oeste
- Uma cachalote a descansar à superfície antes de mergulhar — e ainda vimos a sua cauda erguer-se lindamente enquanto desaparecia em busca de lulas.
- E um pequeno grupo de golfinhos-de-Risso, com crias e até um recém-nascido com a sua cabecinha amarelada!

🌇 Destaques da saída da tarde:

- Um grande e brincalhão grupo de golfinhos-comuns
- Um grupo social de golfinhos-roazes
- E para terminar — mais cachalotes, incluindo fêmeas e uma cria, do mesmo grupo observado de manhã!

🇬🇧 After yesterday’s incredible sightings of fin whales and blue whales together, today we were fortunate to encounter several sei whales and a very special moment: a blue whale with her calf!
It was an emotional experience for the whole team and everyone on board. 💙
Every trip reminds us why we love what we do.

🇬🇧 This week brought amazing sightings of baleen whales, starting with three humpback whales traveling together in calm and coordinated motion.
On another day, a single humpback was seen peacefully accompanied by a pod of common dolphins, a amazing interspecies moment!
We also had a brief but exciting sighting of a fin whale encounter, gliding just beneath the surface.
Rounding out the week: several s***m whales, bottlenose dolphins, and Risso’s dolphins.

The marine life in the Azores never fails to amaze us. 🐋💙

🇵🇹 Esta semana trouxe encontros incríveis, começando com três baleias de bossas a viajar juntas em movimentos calmos e coordenados.
Noutro dia, uma baleia de bossas solitária foi vista a deslocar-se tranquilamente acompanhada por um grupo de golfinhos comuns, um momento marcante entre espécies!
Tivemos também uma observação breve, mas emocionante, de uma baleia-comum.
E para completar a semana estivemos na presença de vários cachalotes, golfinhos roazes e os golfinhos de Risso.

🇬🇧 Baleen whale season is still going strong in the Azores! 🐋💙

This week brought us some incredible encounters:
We had a spectacular sighting of four baleen whales, two blue whales and two fin whales, traveling TOGETHER to the west. One of the blues even lifted its fluke as it dove. A breathtaking moment!

On other days, we also had the chance to spot humpback whales feeding and traveling around. We observed different individuals, and some of them even showed off their flukes! 🐳✨

Spring in the Azores just keeps delivering unforgettable experiences.

🇵🇹 A temporada das baleias de barbas continua em força nos Açores! 🐋💙

Esta semana trouxe encontros incríveis:
Tivemos uma observação espetacular de quatro baleias de barbas, duas baleias-azuis e duas baleias-comuns, viajar JUNTAS para oeste. Uma das azuis até levantou a cauda ao mergulhar… um momento de parar a respiração!

Noutros dias, também tivemos a sorte de avistar baleias-de-bossa a alimentar-se e a deslocar-se pela zona. Observámos vários indivíduos diferentes, e alguns deles mostraram as suas caudas! 🐳✨

🇬🇧 Spring in the Azores is known for the big baleen whales — and yes, they’re still around 👀 But this week, it was the s***m whales and Risso’s dolphins who stole the show!

We encountered groups of s***m whales, including playful calves and some impressive adult males. The adults did their typical feeding dives, lifting their flukes high before disappearing into the deep. And the Risso’s dolphins, with their beautiful social scars, added their own charm to the experience. 🐋🌊🛥

Spring whale watching? Absolutely worth it. 🔝

🇵🇹 A primavera nos Açores é famosa pelas grandes baleias de barbas — e sim, elas ainda andam por cá 👀 Mas esta semana, quem brilhou mesmo foram os cachalotes e os golfinhos-de-Risso!

Avistámos grupos de cachalotes, com crias curiosas e machos adultos impressionantes. Os adultos fizeram os seus mergulhos típicos de alimentação, levantando as caudas antes de desaparecerem nas profundezas. E os golfinhos-de-Risso, com as suas belas cicatrizes sociais, deram um toque especial a cada encontro. 🐋🌊🛥

Observação de cetáceos na primavera? Vale totalmente a pena. 🔝

🇬🇧 What a day out on the ocean! 🌊
This morning we were surrounded by life — plenty of s***m whales, Risso's dolphins, and a large group of bottlenose dolphins.
In the afternoon, things changed completely — two humpback whales traveling together, common dolphins, and the first pilot whales of the season! 😍

That’s the magic of whale watching: no two trips are ever the same. Every time we head out, it’s a whole new adventure!

🇬🇧 🌊 Sunfish Sighting! ☀️🐟

We spotted something incredible last week — a sunfish basking near the surface! These ocean giants are among the heaviest bony fish in the world, and seeing one in the wild is always a rare gift.

This one was calmly drifting along, its tall dorsal fin slicing through the water... An unmistakable round, flattened body, and those big, curious eyes. Sunfish often come up to the surface to soak up the sun and to let seabirds clean off their parasites.

If you're out at sea, keep your eyes wide open! And remember: although they may look slow and clumsy, these gentle giants are harmless and play a fascinating role in the marine ecosystem.

🌞🌙 Fun fact: in English, it’s called sunfish because it's often seen sunbathing. In Portuguese, the name peixe-lua (“moonfish”) refers to its round, moon-like shape!

🇵🇹 🌊 Avistamento de Peixe-Lua! 🌙🐟

Avistamos algo incrível na semana passada — um peixe-lua tomando sol perto da superfície! Esses gigantes dos oceanos estão entre os peixes ósseos mais pesados do mundo, e ver um na natureza é sempre um presente raro.

Este estava calmamente à deriva, com sua nadadeira dorsal alta cortando a água... Corpo arredondado e achatado inconfundível, e aqueles olhos grandes e curiosos. O peixe-lua costuma subir à superfície para se aquecer ao sol e para permitir que aves marinhas limpem seus parasitas.

Se estiver no mar, fique de olhos bem abertos! E lembre-se: embora pareçam lentos e desajeitados, esses gigantes gentis são inofensivos e desempenham um papel fascinante no ecossistema marinho.

🌞🌙 Curiosidade: em inglês, o peixe-lua é chamado de sunfish por ser visto tomando sol. Já em português, o nome destaca seu formato arredondado, parecido com a lua cheia!
