If you’ve joined one of our trips before, you’ll probably recognise one of the most common phrases heard on board: “It’s gonna diveeee!”
After a big arch, this is often the last view we get of a s***m whale before it disappears beneath the surface.

While these moments are always impressive to witness, the flukes are also an important source of information for our work: each s***m whale has a unique fluke pattern, allowing us to identify individuals through photo-identification.
By comparing photographs collected over time, we can recognise individuals, monitor their presence in the area, and contribute to a better understanding of their movements and behaviour.
What may look like a simple dive is therefore also an opportunity to collect valuable data. 🫆

Yesterday afternoon was one of those days.
We headed north of Faial and saw three resident species: s***m whales, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins. We also found a pod of our beloved summer visitors, Atlantic spotted dolphins, and then, to finish the afternoon, a sei whale!
Cory’s shearwaters and common terns were around throughout the trip, and we also had a few hammerhead sharks along the way.
A pretty good afternoon out there. 🌀🤭

Sleep in s***m whales remains one of the least understood aspects of cetacean biology.
Although their characteristic vertical resting behaviour has been known for less than two decades, recent research continues to reveal new insights into how these animals rest in the open ocean.

When an Atlantic Spotted Dolphin decides to check on us while we check on him :) 🌀

Although this energetic species accounts for one of the most frequent summer sightings in the Azores, they are actually non-resident migratory visitors. As an oceanic species adapted to warm-temperate and tropical waters, they migrate north to the archipelago during the summer months to feed, socialize, and reproduce in our nutrient-rich waters.

Two days ago, we had one of the best sightings of false killer whales we’ve ever had. These animals are easily among the most exciting species to encounter at sea: highly social, fast, and incredibly curious, they’re actually one of the largest dolphin species (not whales). Every encounter with them is different, and this one was definitely one to remember. 🌀🌊

From this afternoon trip: a breaching s***m whale!!! 💦 Breaching remains one of the least understood whale behaviours; no one knows for sure why s***m whales breach, but it may help with communication, social interactions, or even removing parasites.
