P.S. We never did learn to follow the rules. Blue Ridge Pride Festival comes to Pack Square Park Sept. 25–26, because in Asheville, Pride looks better in fall color anyway.

Most people picture the tropics when they hear "rainforest." But the mountains surrounding Asheville hold one of the only temperate rainforests in the eastern United States, with fern-covered slopes, thundering waterfalls, and hardwood canopies so dense the light comes through in pieces.

If you’re after a classic waterfall hike only 25 miles from Asheville, Catawba Falls belongs on the list, with river sounds, wooded scenery, and one of the area’s most recognizable cascades.

📈 Elevation gain: ~840 ft
🧭 Difficulty: Moderate
🐕 Pet-friendly: Yes (leashed)
👧 Kid-friendly: Yes

✅ Good to know:
• The full loop trail is open, but the upper viewing platform and Wildflower Trail remain closed
• The trail includes 580 hand-built stairs, a 60-foot observation tower, and a custom-designed railing inspired by the district’s mountain skyline.
• Additional repairs are continuing through the spring and summer months, so follow posted signage and closures
• The trail follows the river most of the way and passes historic remnants along the route
• Stay off slick rocks around the falls and do not stand on the dam wall
