Just arrived at a Madeira icon: Welcome to Reid's Palace

Perched above the Atlantic in Funchal, Reid’s Palace has been welcoming guests since 1891. The hotel was the vision of Scottish entrepreneur William Reid, and over its 130+ year history has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shaw to European royalty.

Today, the iconic pink palace is home to 126 rooms & suites, 10 acres of subtropical gardens, three pools, direct access to the Atlantic, its famous afternoon tea and Michelin-starred William Restaurant…all while holding onto the old-world charm that makes it feel so special.

Let’s debate: can AI really replace a travel advisor?

There’s a lot of buzz around AI right now, and yes, I use it, but not how you think. It makes me more efficient, and clearly I’ve also figured out how to have a little fun with it!

But for those who have worked with me, I’d confidently say no.

Am I obsessively checking to make sure your international flight departs while I’m also out to dinner? Yes. Trying to work out but simultaneously answering client emails? Yes. Advocating behind the scenes when something isn’t right? Always.

Can AI book you a hotel? Of course.

But does it know you? Does it know you prefer modern over classic? Which hotel has the buzziest lobby bar? That there’s a renovation going on you should know about? Does it have relationships at the hotel? Is it advocating for you when something goes wrong?

No.

AI can give you options. But it doesn’t know you, and it doesn’t care how your trip turns out.

I do. And that’s the difference.

And yes, obviously, I used AI to make these photos. 😂

Next stop: Portugal 🇵🇹

Later this week we’ll be heading to Portugal, splitting our week between my first-ever visit to Madeira and a return to Porto.

First up, Madeira: oceanfront downtime at Belmond Reid’s Palace, tennis, hiking, exploring Funchal and getting a firsthand look at some of the island’s top hotels.

From there, we’ll trade island life for Porto, exploring the city, tasting our way through its food and w**e scene and spending a day in the Douro Valley.

I love getting to experience destinations this way: enjoying them as a traveler while also scouting what’s worth recommending to my clients.

Fall is bringing some very good travel plans 🍂

From Oktoberfest in Munich and cruising the Danube to Lake Como, the Irish countryside, Montana, Paris for Celine Dion, and a little Disney magic, these are just a few of the trips I’m booking this season.

One of my favorite parts of this job is that no two trips ever look quite the same.

Consider this your cheat sheet for when to start planning your next trip…

Can you plan an amazing trip last minute? Absolutely. But if you want the best hotels, room categories, rates, guides and experiences, timing matters.

And a reminder: nearly everything I book is at a flexible rate, so booking early doesn’t necessarily mean locking yourself into plans months in advance. It simply gives us access to more options before availability starts to disappear.

The earlier we start, the more choices we have, and the less we have to choose from what’s left.
