My first morning in Botswana, and there were a few tears behind the camera. I don’t think anything could have prepared me for seeing this face in person.

Less than 24 hours here and I’m already in love.

I am so unbelievably honored and excited to share that my image, “On Thin Ice,” won the Australia Zoo Crikey! Magazine Cover Contest.

I took this photograph nearly five years ago on a Discover Churchill Tours trip I had dreamed of since I was a little kid. Watching this polar bear walk toward us along the Hudson Bay shoreline is a moment I’ll never forget.

But the shoreline was bare, and the sea ice the bear depended on to hunt had yet to form. It was a dream come true, paired with a sobering reminder of how a warming climate is changing their world.

I hope sharing moments like this gives people a reason to care a little more about the wildlife and places we stand to lose.

Seeing a momma bear and her cubs walking through a developed area might seem out of place, but at Brooks, we’re the ones visiting their home.

Bears move through these areas just like they move through the rest of their habitat, and sometimes that means walking right past cabins, trails, and people.
