incredible wildlife and fascinating human stories and our trips
combine

all of these things. Travel with GeoWorld and gain something extra: All our trips are
guided by an experienced Geologist. On one of our trips you will see
the wildlife and historical sites that you may expect to see on other
trips, but in addition you will have the geology and scenary explained
to you. GeoWorld’s trips are currently run in the Polar regions and
Wales, but will soon be expanding to offer trips to other destinations
such as the Pyrenees, Canadian Rockies, Galapagos, Iceland and East Africa.

Today marks the 300th birthday of James Hutton (1726–1797), the Scottish scientist often described as the Father of Modern Geology.

In 1788, Hutton visited the spectacular coastline at Siccar Point in the Scottish Borders. Looking at the rocks exposed in the cliffs, he realised that the Earth must be vastly older than anyone had previously imagined. The evidence before him revealed an almost unimaginable span of geological time, a concept we now know as Deep Time.

That moment transformed our understanding of the planet and laid the foundations for modern geology. Hutton’s observations showed that the Earth is constantly changing through processes that continue today, shaping landscapes over immense periods of time.

Siccar Point remains one of the most important geological sites in the world and is the very first stop on our Scotland tour. This year is especially significant as Scotland celebrates Hutton’s tercentenary, with the opening of the new Deep Time Trail leading visitors to the famous viewpoint overlooking the unconformity that inspired his groundbreaking ideas.
