After more than 30 years in travel, I still enjoy discovering journeys that feel fresh and unexpected.

From time to time, I like to share travel ideas that catch my attention, experiences that many travelers may not yet have come across.

This one immediately stood out.

In 2025, AmaWaterways introduced two elegant boutique ships, AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia, sailing along Colombia’s historic Magdalena River.

With only 60–64 guests onboard, the seven-night journey feels wonderfully intimate as it travels through colourful river towns, vibrant musical traditions, warm Caribbean culture, and one of the most exciting culinary regions in Latin America.

For North American travelers, Colombia is also surprisingly easy to reach, with convenient flights into Cartagena and very little time difference.
